Durham Knights formed in Scugog Chess players face off at library each week By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The battle of kings, queens, knights, bishops and others continues every Thursday evening at the local library. . Members of the Durham Knights Chess Club wage war each week between 7 p.m and 8:30 p.m. at the Scugog Public Memorial Library. And since the club's inception a couple of weeks ago, interest has been on the rise. "The amount of people we're getting out is fantastic. The first night I expected four or six people and we got 10. That was so unbelievable and I'm really encouraged because last week we had 18 players," said club co-founder Charlotte Hale. The idea for a local chess club came up in conversation once and, with sup- port from a local pub, play began Jan. 7. "We were just talking about it one day and we thought it would be good for the people who play the game and for the kids," Ms Hale said last week, adding that management from the Durham Arms pub kicked in the money for sets, bringing the club's total up to seven boards. "It's good for the kids because it's got skills they need for class like strategic thinking; it gives us a chance to introduce them to a new and exciting game," she said. skills and concentration. It's a great mental exercise." Many youngsters playing chess today have done so only against a computer. The chess club allows them to match wits with other people. "This way they sit across the table from each other and they're interacting with other kids, not the computer," said Ms Hale. "Instead of looking down at the board on a computer screen, they look across the board and see everything from a different viewpoint." While competition is organized in age categories, adults are sometimes sur- prised by the skills of some youths. "I got beat good recently; this kid got me in about 45 minutes, but I didn't know who he was," co-founder Tom Thekan said of his match with 10-year- old Benjamin de Boer, a local student and one of the best chess players in the province. Competitors are matched according to their ages and abilities, says Ms Hale. "So far we've had no problem matching up pairs, but in the near future we're going to have to set up some sort of structured ladder system for the match- es."
