McClelland Port Perry Star The hockey season is slowly and quietly coming to the end for the Port Perry ModJacks. And this year there is no chance for an 11th hour miracle or edge-of- the-seat heroics. The green and white lost all hope of a playoff berth last Wednesday night when they were mathemati- cally eliminated by the Little Britain Merchants. p Last season at this time, the ModJacks were up to their necks in a battle with the Georgina Ice for the final playoff berth and thanks to a pair of thrilling wins over the Ice on the final weekend of the sea- son they were able to sneak past Georgina by mere percentage points. But it's not to be this season as the ModJacks were nipped 5-4 by the Merchants to end any hopes. Then Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, they took it on the chin 5-0 to the Uxbridge Bruins, a team locked in battle for first place with Lakefield: The loss to Uxbridge wraps up a truly horrendous January for the MoJacks in which they could man- age just two wins and eight losses. They earned another point for an overtime loss to Lakefield to give them five points out of a possible 20 during the month. And December was not much better as they lost six of ten games, Their four wins that month came in a row the week before Christmas, and during that stretch the MoJacks really looked like they had turned the corner and would be in for a strong finish to the season. It was not to be, however as they lost 11 of their next 13 games. To their credit, the ModJacks refused to give up hope for that playoff spot even when they had nothing more than a mathematical chance. They turned in a spirited effort against the Merchants, despite coming out on the short end of the 5-4 score. In fact, head coach Tom Thornbury said afterwards it was a game in which the team showed him something. "Everybody came to work that night. During the season it was sometimes in the back of my mind that I wondered about this team. But that game they proved to me that we are able to compete," he said. "Despite the 5-4 loss we were in it for the entire game," he added, though still very disappointed that the club failed to make the post- season competition. Adam Jones netted a pair for the Modacks that night with singles to Adam Bonneveld and Shane Patrick. Patrick, who joined the club three weeks ago from the Bobcaygeon Bullets, was snake-bitten against the Merchants. "He could have won the game for us on one shift," said coach" Thornbury, as Patrick hit a goal post, a cross bar and bounced one off the goalie's mask. And the coach Turn to Page 22 Peewee Lions pick up win, tie The Lions Club house league hockey team picked up three points in their last two outings, with a win and a tie. Last week they just edged out Shoppers Drug Mart by "a score of 4-3. Colin Holditch opened the scor- ing in the first period, assisted by Luke Fraser and Peter Dutka. The Lions went up by two when Luke scored, with help from Brett Whyte and Colin. Shoppers came from a deficit of two, to go ahead by one with goals scored by Craig Kehoe from Peter Jones, Alex McKay assisted by Craig and Peter, and then Craig from Peter again. It did not look good for the Lions as they were down by one goal with less than three minutes to go, thanks to some stellar saves by substitute goalie, Darryl Copithorn. Then Colin Holditch came up with a great effort to score two goals at 2:27 and 1:56, with assists by Brett Whyte and David Dekoning, to pull a win out of the fire. The next game was a 3-3 draw against Browmans. Browman's first goal was by Cassidy Webber, Turn to Page 22
