The second game of the series was a nail-biter in Pickering on Feb.11. Port Perry open the scoring in the first on a goal by Taylor Muir; Richard Vannetten assisted on the play with a pass out from the corner. Richard added to his points total with Port's next goal after Hugh Allward rang one off the post, Cody Steranka also assisted on the play. With a two-goal lead, the Predators relaxed a bit too much and before the end of the third, Pickering tied it up send- ing them into a 10 minute sudden-death overtime. The two teams fought it out for nine minutes and 40 seconds until Richard Vannetten hit Hugh Allward with a pass. Knowing the clock was running down Hugh wast- ed no time and put it away for the win. This forced the third game, back on home ice, Feb.14. The Predators obviously came to play Turn to Page 22 By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry Predators are in the OMHA Midget A quarter-finals against their arch rival Cobourg after dispatching the Peterborough Nationals Saturday night. The Predators clipped the Nats 3- 1 in Peterborough to win the best-of- five playoff series three games to one. They now travel to Cobourg Tuesday night for game one of a best- of-five (face off at 8:30 p.m.) with game two at the Scugog Arena this coming Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. The trail to the All-Ontario Finals through Cobourg won't be quite so easy as it was against the Peterborough squad. Cobourg finished first overall in League play and earned a playoff bye to this position. And against Port Perry in four games this season they won three and tied one, all by close margins. But the Predators are more than ready to meet the challenge, said team manager Richard Hobbs. "We are a much improved team," he said, from when the two squads met last. The Predators will ice nearly a full line-up against Cobourg. One player had a game suspension for checking from behind and Matt Hooker may miss the opener due to injury. Against Peterborough Saturday night, the Predators were determined to end the series and not have to play a fifth and deciding game on home ice. Chris Skerratt opened the scoring in the first period with an assist from Ryan McQuade. The Nats tied the game midway through the period and that's how the score was until early in the third period. McQuade got what proved to be the game and series winner early in the final frame, taking a nice set-up pass in the slot from Mike Hamilton. McQuade made no mistake with his shot. Some insurance is always helpful and it was added late in the third by Matt McMaster. He was checking deep in the Nat zone when a clearing shot hit him and bounced into the net. Take 'em any way you get 'em in playoff hockey. The Predators looked like they might make the series a cake-walk as they won the first two games by Turn to Page 23 Junior C playoff results Merchants trailing in Lakefield series; Uxbridge, Georgina Ice all tied up By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The Little Britain Merchants have their backs to the wall as they trail the Lakefield Chiefs two games to none in their best-of-seven Junior C semi-final series. The Central Ontario League defending champs are pretty well in a "must-win" situation when they travel to Lakefield for Game 3 tonight (Feb. 16). Game four is set for the Little Britain Arena this coming Saturday night with the faceoff at 7:30 p.m. In both games played last Tuesday in Lakefield and Saturday in Little Britian, the Merchants downfall was the third period. The games were close after 40 minutes, but the Chiefs put things away in the third winning the opener 7-3 and Game 2 by a 6-3 score. The success enjoyed by the Chiefs to date has been a result of solid hockey all around. They are a well balanced team who don't have to rely on one line to do their scoring. Ian Donaldson, son of coach Colin, joined the squad at the sign- ing deadline of Jan. 10 after playing Jr. B with the Peterborough Petes, and his presence has been a big help to the Chiefs.
