Scugog Fire Chief Richard Miller presented council with pre- liminary plans for the station, which would cost an estimated $1 million to complete. Changes to Crandell St. station would bring it up to around 10,000 square feet, complete with a sec- ond floor, more parking space for the department's five fire trucks, and other upgraded or new ameni- ties. The building currently mea- sures 4,300 square feet. The fire department has simply outgrown the hall, said the chief. "We just don't have enough room," he said. "The Fire Marshal puts a 30-year limit on stations, and we're in our 35th year here." The original building was con- structed in 1964 with the meeting room added on in the 70s. An extra truck bay was tacked on in the early 80s. "We're looking to the future; this station will be here for another 30 years at least, and we felt we had to get some plans going to build a station for the future," said Chief Miller. A station location study done by the Fire Marshal about three years confirmed that the site of the current station is adequate. "We have the proper location in Port Perry for a station," said Chief Miller. "So we hired a con- sultant who gave us the okay that we could renovate here and that took us to the second stage, where we could do preliminary drawings and cost estimates." If council gives the department the okay, more in-depth drawings could be done and tenders could be sent out by next spring. "We'd totally gut this place... we'd have to either put the trucks and equipment somewhere else or build a shelter on-site for.six or eight weeks until the bottom appa- ratus area is done," said the chief. However, money, as always, remains the problem for: the Scugog Fire Department. "We have about $400,000 in reserves right now that goes into our municipal project fund, and we could probably have about half-a-million depending on this year's budget," said the chief. "We can't fund raise for this and we're not getting money from anyone else; this definitely has to come from council. How and when is up to them," he said. "But, every year we wait, it adds another five or six per cent onto the cost. What will cost a $1 million this year will cost $1.25 in four years." Once constructed, the new sta- tion will feature a large multi- purpose major operations room, better washrooms, storage, repair and change rooms as well as a dispatch room. A Cannington woman is dead after a collision involving two vehicles Friday north of Greenbank. Whitby OPP are still investigating the crash, which occurred at 5:15 p.m., about 1.5 km south of the intersection of Hwy. 12 and Regional Rd. 6 Police said a north- bound Dodge Caravan driven by Jean Tremblay, 61, of Whitby, collided with a Dodge Stratus that was being driven south by 74- year-old Norma Clark, of Cannington. Mrs. Clark was trans- ~ ported by ambulance to hospital in Port Perry, where she was pronounced dead. The other driver sus- tained non life-threaten- ing in juries. Roads in the area were slick after a day-long snow, which was blown about by occasionally heavy winds.
