McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry Predators will meet Owen Sound in a best-of-five Midget A Ontario semi-final series starting this weekend. The Predators advanced to the semis with a stellar three-game sweep of arch-rival Cobourg. And they did it the hard way, win- ning game three last Tuesday night right in Cobourg by a 4-2 margin. The Predators have enjoyed out- standing netminding by Mike MacLennan and Ryan Fraser through the playoffs and in crucial game three it was MacLennan's turn to shine as he constantly came up - with the big saves to give his team a chance to win it. The Cobourg players came out of the chute like dynamos and opened the scoring in the first. That 1-0 lead held until late in the period when Mike Hamilton was set up by Ryan McQuade and Matt McMaster. The Predators' McQuade put his team into the lead in the second on a short-handed goal set up by Hamilton. Cobourg tied it while on a two- man power play. But midway through the second, Nick Pelyk netted what proved to be the winner. Hamilton and McMaster got the assists on Pelyk's goal. With the Predators holding a slim 3-2 lead, the teams battled back and forth through much of the final period until McQuade finally put the icing on the cake with just 28 seconds left in regulation. 'As an indication of just how evenly matched the two teams were, the first two games of the series were decided by a single goal (scores of 2- 1in OT and 5-4) Hamilton drew an assist on McQuade's insurance goal to give him four points for the night. McQuade had two goals and an assist while McMaster had two assists to keep his red hot playoff scoring streak going. Owen Sound should prove to be a tough opponent for the Predators as well. The Sound bumped off Bradford in three straight, and a Predator team official who took in game three in Bradford last Thursday night described them as a good skating club. "We will have to use our speed and size to our advantage in this series," said the official. The winner will advance to the All-Ontario Midget A championship series against Woolwich (near Guelph) or a team from the Niagara Falls area. The Port Perry-Owen Sound series gets underway at the Scugog Arena this Friday night (March 5) at 9 p.m., with game two in the Sound March 6 at 8:30 p.m. Game three is in Port Perry March 12 at 9 p.m. and game four is back in Owen Sound March 13 at 8:30 p.m. Should a game five be necessary the venue will be decided by a coin toss after game four. If the Predators-Owen Sound series is anything like the one against Cobourg, Port Perry and area fans will see some outstanding Midget hockey as these guys know how to play this game.
