16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 16, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Doerfler back in court for fatal accident The man accused of causing a fatal accident while fleeing police near Port Perry last year made a brief appearance in an Oshawa court last week. David Doerfler, a 35- year-old Claremont man, appeared before court last Thursday (March 11) and was remanded until March 24. He remains in custody pending the start of proceedings against him. During the his short appearance, court heard that discussions were cur- rently being held between Mr. Doerfler's defense Pot luck luncheon, attorney, Ken Murray, and the Crown's John Scott. Mr. Doerfler was arrested and charged shortly after 2 a.m. on Nov. 15. It is alleged that he ran a red light while fleeing Durham Police at the Manchester intersec- tion of Hwys. 12 and 7A and collided with another vehicle, killing John Michael Gibbons, a 47- year-old Oshawa man. Police allege that in his effort to elude the officers, Mr. Doerfler turned his headlights off and contin- ued travelling westbound at speeds in excess of 100 sponsored by Ladies Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion - noon - 1 p.m. euchre to follow. Durham Regional Police report that Marjorie Knapp, 62, was pronounced dead at a Port Perry hospital on March 12 after the car she was a passenger in was involved in a collision in Clarington. Police say that at approximately 1 p.m. on March 12 that Mrs. Knapp was travelling east on Regional Rd. 20 in an Oldsmobile with her husband Clifford, 72, and their son Noel, 29. Their vehicle collided head-on with with a Chev van, which was being operated by Randy Ovenden, a 39-year- old Cavan resident. The accident occurred on a curve to the west of the 10th Concession. As a result of the collision, Mrs. Knapp was pro- nounced dead and her husband and son were transported by ambulance to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto where they are listed in critical condition. Both vehicles were demolished in the accident. Alcohol is not a factor in this collision, police say.
