McClelland Port Perry Star The hockey season ended Saturday for the Port Perry Midget, Predators as they were defeated 5-1 by the Owen Sound Crescent Rattlers who now move on to the All-Ontario finals. The Rattlers, backed by the fine goaltending of Steve Silverthorn, dumped the Predators three games to one in their best-of-five Midget "A" semi-final series. After a thrilling overtime victory Friday night at the Scugog Arena, the Predators were in Owen Sound on Saturday hoping to pull out anoth- er win and force a fifth and deciding game back in Port Perry on Sunday. But in front of their home town fans and with their number one stop- per back in the cage, the Rattlers had other ideas as they skated to a 5-1 triumph. The Rattlers were never in serious trouble in this one, taking a 2-0 lead in the first and building it to 4-0 after the middle stanza. They added another in the third. Ryan McQuade, from Chris Skerratt, managed the lone Port Perry goal in the third period. Dave Reid netted a pair of goals to lead his team on the scoresheet, but, as he had in the first two games of the series, it was Silverthorn in the Rattler cage who stood on his head and repeatedly foiled the Predator's scoring chances. He was especially strong in the final period when the Predators threw everything at him but the old kitchen sink, to no avail, In the game Friday night in front of another large crowd at the Scugog Arena, the Predators looked like they might be able to battle their way back into this series against the well-rounded Owen Sound squad. First period goals by Nick Pelyk from Jason Whitworth and Dean Van Camp from Ryan McQuade gave them a 2-0 lead. Pelyk converted a two-on-one break with a low shot to the corner, and Van Camp's goal off a rebound with 49 seconds left came with Port Perry enjoying a four-on- three man advantage. Rattler back-up goalie Brock Jackson was in the cage for this game, while Ryan Fraser had the start for Port Perry. Early in the second the Rattlers' Mike Green made it 2-1 on a bit of a "gift" as his centering pass from Turn to Page 24 Annual fundraiser is March 19 Cartwright Minor Ball is preparing for its sixth Annual Skate-a-Thon.
