"We check and see that there are no exhaust leak, no misfires and no visible smoke. The car is then put on the machine where it will run for a maximum of four minutes at 39 kilometres an hour," said Mr. Bissette. For those who fail the test -- only six out of 28 vehicles tested by last Friday afternoon had failed -- repairs can either be done at Canadian Tire or at the cus- tomer's preferred garage. If the vehicle is repaired at a certified garage, and $200 is spent on fixing the vehicle, then another test will not be required for another two years. "It's mostly older cars -- those in the '80s -- that have been failing. They haven't been kept up or something's getting old, that sort of thing." The cost of the test is $32.10, including GST.
