"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 16, 1999 - § q The Bod Bovey San Parents are anxious to get Andrew home Baby's arrival home delaye Sos By Chris Hall + Port Perry Star Little Andrew McMullen's arrival home to Port Perry and his parents has been delayed by a number of health problems, says his anxious mother. The one-month-old baby boy of Jill and Gary McMullen. is currently a patient in hospital in Oshawa, where he is being observed. "He's not home yet. He's developed a few problems and they're keeping him a little longer," said Mrs. McMullen last Friday morning. After a rough start -- Andrew James Donald McMullen was born prematurely and weighed only four pounds, four ounces at birth -- the couple's second child has experienced a heart murmur and has even stopped breathing in the past week. "They just want to keep him until the complications clear up. He had a couple of episodes last weekend where he stopped breathing for a bit and the heart murmur is intermittent -- sometimes they can detect it and other times not -- so they want to be sure," said Mrs. McMullen. Dut, there have been no further complications than those." The problems little Andrew is experiencing are com- mon in premature babies though, adds Mrs. McMullen. The next hurdle for the youngster will be getting his weight up, said Mrs. McMullen. "The doctors have said that his problems should clear up when he gets bigger, so we're hoping that he gains some weight," she said, noting that he is slightly over the five-pound mark now. After battling through a series of infections herself earli- er while in hospital care, Mrs. McMullen says she is doing well. ""m not doing too bad; it's getting tiring going down to Oshawa every day, but it's nice because he's closer to home." Andrew was admitted to a Markham-Stouffville hospital after his mother was released from Womens' College Hospital in Toronto in late February. He was since moved to an Oshawa hospital when a neo-natal bed opened up. The McMullen family's medical odyssey began Jan. 5 when Jill went to the emergency department at the Port Perry hospital and it was discovered that amniotic fluid was escaping. Doctors there determined that she would be best served in a neo-natal unit, since she was in her 27th week of pregnancy.
