"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" CY PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 23, 1999 - 9 Study advised against purchase of Reach St. building By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Purchasing the former Old Port Marketing premises and turning it into the township's new municipal building at an estimated cost of almost $2.5 mil- lion is way out of Scugog's budget, says administrator Earl Cuddie. A study that cost the municipality almost $13,000 says so. The firm of Barry-Bryan and Associates was hired last year to study the building. But the proposal proved to be too costly, said Mr. Cuddie. "They worked on it for six or seven months last year, taking a look at it for the possible use as a new townshi building," he said. "They went over it to see how the building is structurally and they gave us possible design layouts. We tossed around the idea of maybe a joint venture with the (Durham) police." The building, which used to house the operations of Old Port Marketing before the company moved just west of town on Scugog Line 6, is at the north- west corner of Reach St. and Old Simcoe "We found out it was on the market and we recognize that our present set- up is very inefficient, so we looked into it," said Mr. Cuddie This building was considered by Scugog Township for new municipal offices. A consultant's report indicated the move would cost in excess of $2 million. "We own the (Scugog) Community Centre which is right next door, and we thought it would be a perfect fit." Township staff are currently working out of two buildings: a small building on Perry St. where the council chambers, along with the mayor's and finance offices are, and a small house on nearby 'North St., which is used by the clerk's department. The cost of the purchase and renova- tion of the Reach St. building was just too high, said Mr. Cuddie. "It figured out to be somewhere around $2.4 or $2.5 million for us to acquire the property and do the reno- vations we'd want to have done. It just wasn't feasible," he said, noting that the township was looking at roughly 15,000 square feet for new offices for its 17 staff members. Durham Police would have had approximately 10,000 square feet in office space, he added. The police have issued tenders for a new building. The cost of the study on the property came to a total of $12,726.80. "I know it would have been the perfect spot; it was a perfect location for us," said Mr. Cuddie. "But we have to keep our priorities straight and first, and foremost, we have to go through our budget for the township and see how that hits us." Council, however, plans to take a long look at the possibility of renovating and expanding the current municipal building on Perry St. in the future, he added.
