"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 23, 1999 - 21 Ri ] - J RAL NIRY STAR Roorts Curling season wraps up with ie annual Kelly Bonspiel Curling at Blackstock Curling Club concluded with a successful Kelly Bonspiel on Monday and Tuesday evenings. When the games were complet- ed the team of Doug and Karen Kadowaki and Grant and Laura Micklewright had accumulated an incredible 50 points. In sec- ond place were Cameron Porter, John Bouwhuis, Marg Fielden and Tony Bloehman. Leanne and Bev Goslin, Tony Duivestyn and Paul MacIntyre placed third. The Awards Banquet will be held this Friday evening, March 26 at 7 p.m. at the United Church in the form of a pot luck supper. This year all former curlers and their spous- es are invited to attend as this is a celebration of 50 years of the club. Please bring any old pictures, memorabilia etc. to create a memory corner at this special evening. A special pre- sentation will also be made to Merlin Suggitt who is the only living charter member and who still continues to regularly curl each week. Rev. Wesley Hutton who was very instrumental in forming the Blackstock Curling Club 50 years ago, passed away in Brooks, Alberta in January of this year. In addition special enter- tainment will be part of the program of the evening. So if you or your spouse had any part in the Blackstock Curling Club, you are invited to attend. Many from this community attended the open house at the home in Lindsay of Peggy and Fred Stacey to help them cele- brate their golden wedding anniversary on Saturday after- 'noon. There were 12 tables at the Tuesday evening card party with the following winners: Muriel Butson, Muriel Selby, Richard Potter, Ken McKenzie, Grace Bassant, Elaine Bailey and Ruth Griffen. Lucky draw winners were Verna Robinson, Dorothy Olan, Joan Sutcliffe, Helen Dorrell, Gary Notenboom and Ed Johnson. Several attended the visita- tion and the funeral service in Oshawa for the late Isla Barker who was well known in United Church circles. The choir of the United Church is very busy preparing for the Cantata which will be presented at the regular Sunday morning service at 9:45 a.m. next Sunday, Palm Sunday, March 28. All are wel- come to enjoy this presentation. All the families who were away for March Break are home again now that the buses are on the roads again and sched- ules have resumed. Hope you all had happy holidays. St. John's News Morning prayer was cele- brated at St. John's this Sunday, March 21. Father Hugh spoke to us about despair being presumptuous. After all, he reminded us, we do not know what tomorrow will bring. He used Joseph's life as an example since he went from the despair of prison to being the Prime Minister of Egypt, proving that despair is indeed presumptu- ous. Shannon, Jessie and Natasha from our children's choir, together with Ruth and Peggy from our senior choir, sang "God is Good, God is Love" for us and they did a marvelous job. Thank you. We all enjoyed the coffee time after the service. Next Sunday, March 28 is Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week. Father Hugh will bless the Palms before the Eucharist, there will be a pro- cession into the church and then the Eucharist will com- mence. Blackstock Lions Club Lions meet at Ken Hudsons at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 24 for an executive board meet- ing. The sale of Easter Bunnies is going quite well, both with cheese orders and at the super- market. It's with regret that we are forced to postpone The Farmers Night, our greatest one night turnout of the year. We couldn't get that top notch speaker this Ja¥lel=Tg Putsey spring. Plans are to hold it in later October or early November. Positive date and time later. The next Lions sponsgred rotating public speaking com- petitions for Grades 5 to 6 and 7 to 8 will be held at 7 p.m. at the Lions Hall, Mount Albert. Everyone welcome. Carnival of Skating Remember this Sunday, "March 28 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. is the annual Carnival for our Figure Skating Club at Blackstock Arena. Scugog Island Women's Institute The March meeting was held on the 17th at our Scugog Island Hall at 8 p.m. Plans were made to host the District Annual on May 20 where we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Ontario South District. Shirley Women's Institute will be in charge of activities. "How sweet it is" was the motto given by Ann Chandler. We learned about maple syrup and that it is a distinctly North American product. 8-12 gal. (30-45L) of sap are needed to make 1 qt. (1L) of syrup. P.R. Betty Reader Scugog Island United Church A successful St. Patrick's Supper was held on Friday evening prepared by the Grace U.C.W. The supper and enter- tainment were enjoyed by all. Special thanks to all the helpers, cooks, entertainers, and all the supporters of this fundraising event. A service of Communion was held during our regular worship service on Sunday morning. The Moms & Tots & Friends will meet on Wednesday, March 24 at 9:30 a.m. Choir practice will be held on Thursday, March 25 at 7 p.m. | The Gentle Aerobics Class will meet this week on Friday, March 26 at 12:30 p.m. at the church. Meet at Palmer Park at 9:30 a.m. Bring spring plants and bulbs to the church on Saturday, April 3 (a.m.) to help decorate the church. No lilies please due to allergies. Join in the joyful celebration of new life on Easter Sunday, April 4. A "Sonrise" Service will be held at the church at 7:30 a.m. Dress for the weather. Breakfast is served to those attending this early service. Our regular Easter Service will be held at 9:45 a.m. with the Orchestra and choir pro- viding joyful music.
