"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" It's April 1 in Utica Town hall meeting puts politicians on hot seat By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog residents will get an opportunity to put their local government representatives on the hot seat early next month, when a town hall meeting is held in Utica. Rod McKay, president of the Utica Hall Board, confirmed last week that Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt, Durham East MPP John O'Toole, Regional Chair Roger Anderson and Durham District School Board trustee Bobbie Drew will be on hand April 1 to answer questions. "We've arranged for the them to give a general overview on what they're doing and what's coming up, and then there will be a chance for the audience to ask questions," said Mr. McKay. Durham MP Alex Shepherd was scheduled to appear, but cancelled last week, he said. "I think there are a lot of peo- ple here who have concerns with the runnings of the govern- ments," Mr. McKay said. "The only time we see them is at election time, so this will be a chance for them to tell us what they're doing and for people to ask questions. "There are a few things that people are unhappy with, and there are other things that the governments are doing well." The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Utica Memory Hall, and is expected to wrap up by 10 p.m. Refreshments will be served after. Seating capacity at the Hall is 200; those attending the meet- ing are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for Operation Scugog's annual Spring Food Drive. The Utica Memory Hall was the venue for an all-candidates meeting during the 1997 munic- ipal election, said Mr. McKay. "We held a pretty successful meeting during the last election. Accused Is remanded A Udora man charged with drunk driving in the death of a woman made a brief appear- ance in court last week, and was remanded until April. John Mackenzie, 27, March 17. His next court date is scheduled for April 16. Mr. Mackenzie faces a total of five charges which stem from a fatal accident which occurred Feb. 3 around 7:40 p.m. on Regional Rd. 1 south of Regional Rd. 13, near the hamlet of Leaskdale. He turned himself into Durham Police in Oshawa on Feb. 16. Police say the accused was 'northbound on Regional Rd. 1 when his 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix was involved in an acci- dent with a second northbound car. The car crossed the centre line and collided with a south- bound van. The collision left the driver of the van, 52-year- old Sharon Dawson of Leaskdale, with serious injuries. A passenger in the vehicle, 46-year-old Nora Richards of Sunderland, died.
