10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 30, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Durham Liberals choose candidate for spring vote By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Local Liberals have chosen Oshawa resident Garry Minnie as their can- didate in the upcoming provincial election." During a nomination meeting in Bowmanville last Wednesday evening (March 24), Mr. Minnie was acclaimed the Grit candidate for the new Durham riding. With a provincial elec- tion expected to take place this spring, Mr. Minnie said he was glad to get the nomination pro- cess over with. He is eager to challenge Tory incum- bent John O'Toole, cur- rently MPP for Durham East. The name of the rid- ing has been changed as a result of redistribution. "I'm really pleased with how things went at the meeting. There was a nice crowd for an acclamation, and we have tremendous spirit," said Mr Minnie, a first-time candidate. "It's a fact that we need to have a government that is responsible and respon- Garry Minnie sive to the needs of the people of Ontario, and in particular those in the Durham Riding. While he acknowledges that some of the changes made by the present Tory government were much- needed, the 59-year-old former teacher questions the way in which they have been introduced. "I'm not in agreement with the methods they use to implement their changes," he said. And he charges that Tory policies have been detrimental in Durham. The construction of this centre was announced in 1994 and now it looks like it won't be done until 2001 or 2002; that's unaccept- able. "The money they spend to send the patients here to Toronto for treatment - - that $30 million -- would have more than built the cancer centre." Mr. Minnie said Ontario voters want to see: an end to years of tumult at Queen's Park. * "I think the people of Ontario will be looking for a little stability. They've had nine years of this... Bob Rae followed by the Common Sense Revolution. I think they want to return to stability; that's what the munici- palities want, what the health care system wants and what the education system wants."
