But then, often surprise late season storms do come our way. Shirley Turner and grandson Tim Martyn enjoyed the week- end in Caledonia where they visited Lorrie and Ron Minshall, Sara and Ken. They Joined the family in going to Burlington to see Sara compete in the Ontario Trampoline Competition. What an exciting event that would be. Best wishes are extended to Bob Hoogeveen and Cathy Taylor who were married in a very pretty wedding on Saturday evening at Scugog Island Church. The reception and dance was held at the Blackstock Recreational Centre. The annual carnival of the Blackstock Skating Club was held on Sunday afternoon with two exceptional shows based on the Disney theme. The cos- 'tumes were gorgeous. During the program, the acts of Precision Team thrilled the audience. The several solo per- formances by local skaters as well as the group skating were 'excellent. Congratulations to the coach Mona Hood. The Blackstock Curling Club held its annual Awards Banquet at the Blackstock United Church C.E. Room on Friday evening. President Cameron Porter welcomed the large crowd pre- sent and after Grace by Joyce Kelly a delicious pot luck dinner was enjoyed. Entertainment provided by the Pigeon Creek Trio through- out the evening was well received. Karen Barkey pre- sented the annual financial statement. The executive for the next year will be: past-president - Cameron Porter; president - Jan Van Camp; vice-president - Tina Jenkins; secretary - Joyce Kelly; treasurer - Karen and Glenn Barkey, men's reps - Cam Porter, Dave Luckhardt, mixed reps - Marg Fielden and Carl Anderson. Cameron Porter announced the winners in the men's league - Tony Duivesteyn, Harold Luke and Ralph Swain. They received the long standing Merlin Suggitt Trophy. Second place was won by - Peter Luckhardt, David Luckhardt, Richard Van Camp, and Jamie White. Jan Van Camp present- ed prizes to winners in the mixed league as follows: - First - Mike and Lois Marks, Brenda and Ron Metcalf; second - Mike and Lois Marks, Alex and Catriona Walcer and third to Doug and Karen Kadowaki, Larry and Ashley McLean. Tickets drawn for a Blue Jay game were won by Catriona - Walcer as well as a plaque won . by Joy Rudkin. The special event of the evening was the presentation by president Cameron Porter of a special plaque to Merlin Suggitt on the occasion of his 50 years of curling with the curling club. Merlin replied in his own delightful manner. In addition, the Blackstock Curling Club is also celebrating 50 years. Several curlers from former years were present to be part of the celebration. A collection of items and pictures of former years were viewed as part of the celebration of the long history of the curling club. All in all a delightful evening. Jim and Liz Weir and Fraser enjoyed supper at the home of his mother Andrea Weir enroute home from an enjoyable holiday in Disney World. Her local friends will be happy to learn that Mrs. Ruth Thompson has moved back from Beaverton to the Port Perry Nursing Home. Visits will be welcomed. She recently cele- brated her 94th birthday. The annual Talent Auction will be held on Friday, April 23. Ontario North District Women's Institute will present Health Smarts for Women on Saturday, April 17 at. On Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. we will celebrate Maundy Thursday, the Feast of the founding of the Eucharist, with the traditional Maundy Thursday Liturgy. "Good Friday Services com- mence at 10 a.m. with the Stations of the Cross, a spiritual exercise based on Jesus' final walk to Calvary. This will be followed by Communion of the pre-sanctified which will, in turn be followed by the Good Friday Liturgy." On Saturday, The Great Vigil of Easter Liturgy will start at 8 p.m. During this service, which starts in darkness, Father Hugh will conduct the ceremonies of blessing "The New Fire," blessing the Font, and lighting the Paschal Candle. Bells will be rung to celebrate the end of Lent and to signal the start of the Easter Season. There will be lots of music with special anthems and the glorious Easter hymns. Lake Scugog Historical Society Last Thursday night Susan Neale, the curator and director of Scugog Shores Museum gave an excellent address on North of 60. This is the area of our new province of Nunavit (means our land). his was north of the tree line where the people live off fish, seals, and the wild flowering plants and herbs. We cut into our 30th anniversary birthday cake and Paul was there to autograph his new book. Reports were made from different committees dealing with coming events, especially the Nonquon Canoe races in that June weekend. Next meeting April 22. Blackstock Lions Club Don't forget this Tuesday night, March the next round in the Grade 5 to 6 and 7 to 8 public speaking con- tests. The Williams Point residents thanked the Lions for the donation towards speed signs in two spe- cific areas. This was not covered by the townships improve- ments list. The bunny sales are going quite well with people realizing any profit made goes back into the community. Next Lions meeting will be April 7 at 7 p.m. Blackstock Rec. Centre. Fairley conducted the service for Palm Sunday. Easter Lilies graced the Communion table, and the Sunday School waved the traditional palm branches. Ushers were Harvey Mills and Ron Brillinger.
