"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 30, 1999 - 3 By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A slow steady, growth of business in Scugog is key to the township's future in a number of ways, Mayor Doug Moffatt said last week. During Thursday morn- ing's Chamber of Commerce breakfast meet- ing at Emiel's Restaurant, Mayor Moffatt said it's imperative that both new commercial and industrial operations continue to open their doors in Scugog. "No community's per- fect, but we should support those who take the oppor- tunity (to open a business) and encourage them in helping the development of Scugog Township. It is crit- ical to our future," said the mayor: He applauded the actions of Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden and Ward 2 representative Ken Carruthers, who sev- eral years ago started up the township's economic development committee. "They have helped make good decisions and have encouraged participation from many people in that committee," he said. "They are active with the Chamber, other com- mittees, and have ongoing partnerships with the BIA and Port Perry High School... these are all key players in the community." It's important to remem- ber there's a fine line between just enough eco- nomic growth and too much, Mayor Moffatt added. Through a 1994 study answered by Scugog resi- dents, council learned that area residents want to see a slow, consistent growth that won't detract from the way of life they now enjoy. "We came to a number of really firm conclusions," said the mayor. "The people who responded want Scugog to maintain its rural and small-town atmo- sphere -- that was front and centre. "But, at the same time, they'd like to see businesses develop because they want this to be a place where they they can raise their kids and find good employ- ment opportunities," he added. "It's tough -- to stay small and grow at the same time -- but we'll have to Car thieves foiled Thieves managed to 'gain entry into a 1994 Ford Explorer but could not get the vehicle to start, Durham Police report . Police say that some- time between 6 p.m. on March 22 and 7:30 a.m. on March 23 thieves made their way into the locked Explorer and smashed the steering col- umn but failed to get the vehicle to start. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $500. focus our attention on those areas." T h e majority of : thos ¥ho replied to Moffatt the survey had been in Scugog for less than 10 years, the mayor noted. "That means they chose to move here. It's a beauti- ful place, what they've always wanted and they can escape the rat race. There is less crime and less risk," he said. "That's what they want: safety, a great atmosphere and community spirit." In order to attract new businesses, Scugog must play on these strengths, he said. It is illegal for Ontario to offer potential business- es tax breaks and free land to entice them to set up --- shop ia their towns, some- thing that's allowable throughout the U.S. and in some provinces. "We've got to sell on our strengths, we've got to rec- ognize our strengths. We've got a great lake -- which is our biggest factor -- and a downtown that looks like a Mayor stresses need for slow, steady business influx place where you want to shop and we've got a vibrant agriculture indus- try," said the mayor, noting that Chamber activities such as Festival Days and the annual Canada Day celebrations bring count- less numbers of people here to the township. ».
