Here, he is joined by Durham East MPP John O'Toole (left) and Elizabeth Fulford. Province makes good on promise By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Durham Region is finally getting its fair share of community services fund- ing, the province's Long-Term Care Minister said in Port Perry last week. Cam Jackson announced at the Port Perry Community Centre last Thursday afternoon (March 25) that the province is putting an additional $279,715 into the Durham Region Community Care Association, bumping its annual grant up to a total of $2,052,493. The additional money -- which brings the regions annual total for community services to just under $42 million, up from just $21 million only four years ago -- will be used to provide the Meals on Wheels program, transportation, and visits for seniors and adults with physical disabilities who live indepen- dently at home. Mr. Jackson said outlying areas such as Durham have not got their fair share from previous provincial govern- ments, who traditionally under-funded them. It.is time to pay back Ontario' 8 seniors, he said. "Seniors today built our province and they paid their own way. They left us with a debt of five or seven billion; today we're fighting a debt of more than $100 billion, " he said. Minister delivers a boost to Community Care in Durham "We put aside our seniors and started spending. Between 1985 and '95 we spent and we didn't put anything into long-term beds. Nobody planned any- thing and we spent $70 million and nothing on long-term beds. We didn't pay attention to seniors and their needs." The Tory government's spending on seniors' care since winning the 1995 election has been "an unprecedented expansion that goes a long way to allowing seniors to live comfortably and with dignity in their own homes," said Mr. Jackson. Over the next five years, Durham Regional will receive 685 more beds, which represents a 50 per cent increase since 1995, he said. Elizabeth Fulford, executive director of the Community Care Association, told the large crowd that the much- needed cash will be put to good use. "We asked (the government) to show us the money and they delivered," she said. "This will allow us to increase our service to clients and even add more clients... we rarely carry a waiting list." The Association presently serves approximately 5,100 clients and a staff of 1,800 volunteers have a workload ratio of 300 to 1. 0 IYOP kick-off held: page 8 Howard Society to hear talk aaa ii oe IA IK DAVID M.
