Mr. Kemp; sat in the front row, directly in front of Scugog's top politician. He and the mayor exchanged words and jeers throughout the two-hour meet- ing, butting heads on a number of subjects. Mr. Kemp questioned Mayor Moffatt, Kemp square off at §&. Utica meeting ®" Moffatt on why the Scugog Community Centre is set to receive approximately $30,000 in 1999, while other community halls in the township receive $3,000 annually. "Why do all the halls receive a $3,000 grant each year while the Scugog Community Centre got $18,000 in 1997, $51,000 in 1998, and will get $30,000 in 1999?" said Mr. Kemp to applause. "We'd like to see some fair- ness of distribution of tax dol- lars to all community halls," he said. The mayor admitted to the audience that the Scugog Community Centre is not doing as well as council had thought it would. McClelland Port Perry Star Scugog Ward 4 Councillor David Dietlein believes the Scugog Arena in Port Perry should be completely shut down and staff laid off for the summer months. He made the proposal at a meeting Monday of the township "Parks and Recreation committee in an effort to save money. + To back up his suggestions, he presented the committee ; with a lengthy and detailed analysis of the operating costs at "the arena hich concluded that "payroll is a constant drain on ' township revenues, and must be reviewed." ~~ His written report went on to say that if the "arena is run on a seasonal basis with a board of volunteers, a significant ¢ .pavings to the taxpayers of Scugog could be achieved."
