The third annual series of events, known as the Giant Five, are hitting the trails again this season, with the first set to go on Sunday, April 11, at the Bethany location, just'south of Highway 7A. The Giant Five events provide riders of all riding levels with an opportunity to ride on trails that present challenges, fun and excitement, without the hassle of cars and other hazards to bicyclists. Each event features riding distance choices of 10, 20, and 40 kilometers. Most riders are between eight and 65 years of age, and for those who want to compete against their peers, there are age and gender category competitions. Many first time mountain bike riders find these events a great place to start, get pointers and learn to off-road ride in a protected environment. Alpha Racing, a family-run group who puts on the Giant Five, has lined up a full slate of sponsors for draws, with over $10,000 in giveaways and special prizes. Every registrant will receive an event T-shirt, lunch and refresh- ments during and following the event. Among the sponsors contributing to the prizes and ride are Giant Bicycle of Canada, All Canadian Sport Exchange of Oshawa, Pedal Magazine, Timex, Lizard Skin, Victrinox Swiss Army Knives, SRAM, Michelin Tires, Guillevin International and Williams Communications of Oshawa. The prime sponsor, Giant Bicycle of Canada, is providing two great bicycles as draw prizes. All riders names go into an end of season draw for either a Giant ATX 870, a $1,600 aluminum framed high-end front suspension bike, or a $1,700 Giant ATX 970 full suspension bike. The second bike is awarded as a draw prize from among winners of various age and distance categories. Alpha Racing is making a special effort to encourage riders who have never ridden in such events to join the challenge. Younger school-age riders take on the 10 kilo- meter distance. Organizers have even arranged for school competition as a part of the events. If at least four riders participate from the same school, they are considered a "school team." Times for the top four finishers from each school are compared to other school teams, with trophies for the top four riders from the winning school. A "school" trophy will be presented at the end of the season for the overall winners. : The events are sanctioned and fully insured through the Ontario Cycling Association, and are referred to as citizen events. Spectators are not only welcomed, they are encouraged to come out and join in on the fun and excite- ment. The Bethany race location provides one of the best spectator venues for mountain biking in Ontario. Registration for each event begins at 8 a.m., with the first event starting at 10 a.m. Registration forms are available at local bicycle shops or by calling Alpha Racing at 905-986-0959. Riders must wear helmets, spotters monitor the track, St. John Ambulance provides emergency services, and refreshments are supplied along the route. For more information and registration forms, riders and spectators can phone Alpha Racing, fax 905-986-1305 or e-mail: alpha@speedline.ca Successful Blackstock Minor Hockey season wraps up with kids vs parents game Peny | Starat| || 3 cam sence Nursery Care Available 4 ! x 085- | For further information call COMMUNITY CHURCH Thanks to our refs that came out week after week, Tyler Martin, Brian Scott, Jason Morrison, Leo Taillon, Mitch Truax, Taylor Churchill and Gillian Watson.
