"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" LETTERS OP creates 'crushing mass' of red tape To the Editor: Bruce Rodgers' letter last week reaffirms why I am opposed to the Scugog Official Plan. Once it's in place, we will now have two official plans that will create a crushing mass of complicated, mind numb- ing red tape in the way of anybody who wants to cre- ate jobs in this township. Why should we do this? As a member of the eco- nomic development com- mittee, I spend many hours promoting the town- ship trying to get jobs and investment into this com- munity. If all I can tell any potential investor is that his proposal does not com- ply with one or the other official plan, they will not invest here. To provide for a future for our next generation, we can no longer rely on farming or tourism as Mr. Rodgers suggests. Tourism creates low pay- ing seasonal jobs, while farming is increasingly mechanized and provides few employment opportu- nities. We need jobs in this township and we need them now. I understood red tape was supposed to be cut in Ontario, but in this case, consultants will have a profitable field day trying to sort all this out. Getting any job creating proposal approved in this township is difficult enough now. Having two plans will create extra public hear- ings, extra costs, delays and possible disputes between region and the township. Calling potential investors greedy, short- sighted people does not help this municipality attract the investment it needs, it scares it away. David Dietlein, Councillor Ward 4 (Cartwright) More taxes? To the Editor: In response to Jeff Brown's letter, "Are you willing to pay for ser- vices?" (Star April 13.) Mr. Brown wants a second ice pad; I can only suggest that it is for his personal use, as when he held a meeting to gen- erate interest in a second pad, nobody showed. He is also advocating an indoor pool and paved trails, yet we now have a privately operated pool, with no burden on the takpayer. I do not know what he means with paved trails. Mr. Brown says he is willing to pay for these services, yet he lives at ...No thanks home so is not directly affected by municipal tax bills. Secondly, some months ago at a public hearing on a develop- ment project which included low cost row houses, Mr. Brown spoke of the need for lower cost housing for people like him with low (under $20,000) incomes. I suggest to Mr. Brown that once he becomes a municipal taxpayer with an average $2,500 tax bill, (12.5 per cent of his gross income) he will soon change his mind about public spending.
