"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 20, 1999 - 23 - se-- dy Sr PORT PERRY STAR ORTS Practice, hard wort work and dedication key to achieving black belt level From Page 22 And he wants to turn his love of the sport into a career by becoming an instructor and some day opening his own club. He said candidly that he worked and trained very hard for the past four months to prepare for the four hours of testing that are required to achieve the black belt. Also included in the test is an essay, he noted. That meant training three or four times each week. "Karate just becomes a part of you. You just keep going," he said. After receiving the belt and certificate, he told those present he owes much to the Hiryu Bushido Kai members. There were some nights, he said, "when I just didn't want to get off the couch." But the good friends in the club and the enjoyable times often were an inspi- ration in his reaching his first major goal in this ancient form of martial arts. Shihan (the word means 'master' in Japanese) Walker, who holds the 6th degree black belt, praised the dedication of the three who received the black belts. While it is rare for young teens like David and Stefanie to reach this level at age 13 and 16 respectively, it is a bit more common these days as more and more children are taking up the sport, even as young as five years of age. In fact, at Hiryu Bushido Kai, the 175 members range in age from just over five to nearly 60. And many karate enthusiasts continue to enjoy this sport well past the age of 60. Devon Powell rides again Blackstock driver, partner Doug Goad lead the Motorola Cup racing series after taking the checkered flag in Atlanta By Wally Nesbitt r om Corner Five The Motorola Cup series for showroom stock cars staged their second race of the 1999 season on April 18 at Road, Atlanta and there was a familiar face atop the podium at race end. Defending series cham- pion, Devon Powell of Blackstock and his co- driver Doug Goad enjoyed their first win of the year as they took the Powell Motorsports Sunoco/Pennzoil Pontiac Firebird to a 21 second win at the finish of the three hour event. "The car ran great after we solved some electrical problems this morning," said Powell. "We bought the car as a wrecked street Firebird a month ago and converted it into a winner. We found the car in a Montreal scrap yard and they'd brought it from a wrecking yard in Texas." "I imagine the guy that rolled it would be thrilled to know that the car has a new life and it's a win- ner," adds Goad. The race lead changed hands nine times among eight drivers in six differ- ent cars. Powell's average winning speed was 89.477 mph on the 2.54 mile cir- cuit and the victory moves him into top spot in the overall points standing. The next appearance for the Motorolo Cup cars will be at Mosport Raceway on the May 24 Trans-Am Weekend. Sale will help send players to Australia next March From Page 22 $6.75 while 24 single-ply will run $8. All profits raised will go to the Scugog Angels fastball teams who will be travelling to Australia next March. Describing the fundraiser as unique, sales organizer Tom Thekan says the two-day event should catch the eyes of every- one who passes through the parking lot. "Everyone needs it... this is a great fundraiser because every- one needs it. Some people can't eat chocolate or nuts, others don't want to buy magazine subscriptions or wrapping paper; this, this is something no one can say they don't need," he said recently. And, the price is right, he adds. "It's cheaper than in the store, it's cheaper than in any store in town. (Store owner) Jeff Reid was gracious enough to get us the toilet paper and let us sell it right in front of his store. We don't pay for what we sell and we don't pay for what we don't sell because he'll just take it off our hands... the Scugog Angels can't lose with this." A toilet paper weight-lifting competition will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday and the girls are up to the challenge of anyone who takes them to task, he said. All the players from the two midget teams and one junior team -- about 50 in total -- will be on site. As well a radar station will be set up for those who wish to see how fast they can chuck a roll of TP, added Mr.Thekan. --_-- FEATURE RESTAURANT Haugen's Annual Spring COUNTRY COLLECTABLE GIFTWARE SALE Tuesday, April 27" & Wednesday, April 28" 1 0 0 (Equal to PST & GST) OFF 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Join us for a cup of tea and sweets from our bakery. and view our giftware displayed around our restaurant such as: metal welcome signs. handcarved and painted wooden roosters and chickens. a variety of windchimes and much. much more.
