"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 20, 1999 - 27 Local doctor enjoys return to rural roots -- ~~, a ----e--e--ea ATE en I RREBAD G R y Ralph Price's Blackstock practice is & celebrating its first anniversary By Sally Cooke ort Perry Star "Early to bed, early to rise, makes the girls go out with the older guys." Dr. Ralph M. Price recently heard that revised version of the old chestnut, and it tickled his fancy so much that he can't resist using it locally. It may be the only saying that isn't an original, from a man who once said he'd like to be a cowboy when he grew up. This unique doctor doesn't need an introduction to most residents of the Scugog area. He has been practicing for 33 years, most of them in Port Perry. Several hundred townspeople can claim to have been delivered by the physician back in the days when he was actively involved in obstetrics as part of his gen- eral practice. In 1998, Dr. Price relocated to Blackstock. April 14 marked the first anniversary of his Blackstock clinic. "I'm thrilled to be out here," he said. "It's probably the place I've most enjoyed practicing in; it's more like I'm seeing friends than patients." Most of his Port Perry patients now travel to Blackstock to see him. They may even see their photo on the birth boards carefully hanging on an exami- nation room wall. These mementos of appreciative patients throughout the years are filled with only a fraction of the many babies he delivered. Blackstock reminds the family doctor of Port Perry as it was 30 years ago. "People wave at you on the street," he said. "It has the smallest high school in Ontario, and it's one of the finest schools. Virtually everyone who goes to Grade 13 comes out as an Ontario Scholar." Dr. Price said he is thrilled to be in this location, and his pride extends to the office space he has leased for 10 years. Blackstock's only general family doc- tor describes his idyllic job as a steady practice. His busy period comes early in the morning, from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Despite Blackstock's friendly size, some residents are still unaware of Dr. Price's practice. Periodically, he'll receive a new patient that has only just heard about his presence. "I get new Cartwright patients every- day," said Dr. Price. While Dr. Price said his office is becoming fuller, he takes as long as needed with every patient, whether it's five minutes or an hour. A minor expansion is in the works, as Dr. Price has tentatively scheduled a local nurse-practitioner to join his prac- tice at the end of August. "She would be able to see people with colds and do pelvic exams including pap smears," he said. "Some women would like a female to do their physical check- ups." Additional help would also allow Dr. Price to take a longer vacation in the summer. "I have a cottage on Washburn Island, and I would like to take two weeks in k » Dr. Ralph Price and RN Julie Snyder durin piss g a quiet moment at Dr. Price's Ps Blackstock office. He's been working in the village for a year now. July and two weeks in August," said Dr. Price. "Last year I was restricted to one week in each." Besides the family practice, Dr. Price also specializes in chronic pain and psy- chiatry. Any day can bring a mix of patients, and that's the way Dr. Price likes it. Registered Nurse Julie Snyder has worked with the doctor for years, and was part, of his team on the first day the Blackstock practice opened. She described Dr. Price as "great to work with, and great with his patients." Ms Snyder enjoys a joking relation- ship with him, and an ongoing feud about the thermostat. She likes to keep the office cool, while Dr. Price wants it ot. But their easy-going relationship is based on respect. "What I enjoy the most about him is his genuineness. It's a different envi- ronment as opposed to larger clinics," said Ms Snyder. "We've got a good bunch of patients, and out here it's more like a personal service; you get to know peo- ple."
