"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 20, 1999 - 3 Council makes $6,000 commitment for Kinsmen Hall By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog council will attempt to squeeze an extra $6,000 into the 1999 budget so that the Kinsmen Hall can be outfitted with new windows and doors this year. The Kinsmen Hall,. located on the east side of Simcoe St. just north of Queen St., needs extensive renovations. Councillors have questioned the logic in sinking thousands of dollars into the aging build- ing. Scugog Councillor Ken Carruthers (Ward 2) chaired the meeting of township politicians with representatives from each group using the hall April 11. He said it was a pro- ductive one. "It appeared to me that the conversation was a pos- itive one. The councillors ~ seemed to be quite positive and so did the board of man- agement there," said Councillor Carruthers. "If they lose this build- ing, there is nowhere in the community for them to go. There is no space; they can't get a booking at the Latcham Centre and all the local churches are pret- ty much filled up," he said. "They stated their case very well and the council- - lors and the mayor were convinced to let them pro- ceed." The councillors agreed to attempt to squeeze an extra $6,000 into this year's budget so that the Kinsmen . ~ can replace all the windows in the old building, and install three new steel doors. "They did come late and there is nothing in the bud- get for them right now, but we will make a presenta- tion to the finance commit- Trailer, parts are stolen Durham Regional Police were called to a Manchester body shop after thieves stole a trail- er and a number of parts recently. Police report that Manchester Collision, a local body repair shop, closed its doors on April 9. Sometime between April 13 and 15, thieves stole two new front fend- ers, a new hood, and new driver's side door for a GMC Jimmy. The owner, a Blackstock resident, was doing the work himself, police say. The parts are valued at $1,000. As well, sometime between April 7 and 14, thieves stole an orange trailer with three-foot sides, all metal twin axles and hitch, say police. The trailer, stored on the property by an Uxbridge man, is worth $3,000. tee on April 26," said Councillor Carruthers. "We've already agreed now Carruthers {9 Intluds preliminary budget." Council has also agreed to use any leftover asphalt from other township jobs to pave the building's park- ing lot in an attempt to keep water runoff away from the hall. The aging building is in dire need of repairs, but the high cost in this time of economic restraint is a touchy issue, said Councillor Carruthers. But he said that discussions earlier in the year about getting rid of the Kinsmen Hall may have been pre- mature. "There is no doubt we'll keep it; things get said in council that could lead to a bit of a misunderstanding. That building has been around here for many years and it serves a purpose," he said. "It was built and given to the Scouts to use; it's their building, they use it, it serves a purpose in this community." Various township departments will go before the finance committee on April 26 in their attempts to finalize a budget for 1999. A final budget could be determined by May 15 or May 25, said Councillor Carruthers. Spring Fashion Showcase Sale?
