8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 20, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" QUAM Ch er Sar SE CE SIRI OF Ma SY x Ta Students' 30-hour 'famine' supports World Vision By Sally Cooke ort Perry Star Port Perry High School students have held another successful 30-hour famine, raising more than $3,000 for World Vision. Geography Department Head Don Farquharson introduced the event at the school four years ago. It sees young people collecting pledges, then enduring 30 hours without solid food. Proceeds go to the World Vision fund for work in the third world. "It was a student initiated and run program," he said last Friday, as partic- ipants gathered to break their fast with food donated for the effort. "I have to give the students all the credit." The first year's effort brought in $1,200 for World Vision, followed by totals of $1,700 the last two years. Mr. Farquharson's daughter Kathleen volunteered to run the com- mittee this year. "This year I decided to organize it," said Ms Farquharson. "The money raised will go to help children in coun- tries such as Kosovo." Another committee member is Ananda Fulton. She was attracted to the famine effort by the positive message it sends to young people. "This program really encourages teens to help out," she said. Teenagers, as everyone knows, can eat a lot; as they neared the end of their commit- ment, many PPHS kids were trying hard to ward off hunger pangs. . Dianna Lown waited patiently to eat at the end of the famine Friday. "I'm so hungry," she said. "People tempt you with food; it's kind of hard to control that, but I did it." Committee member Emma Marshall, however, said it was easy. "Not much of a sacrifice," she said. Many participants found the Thursday night sleep-over at the school enjoyable. "I liked staying in the gym and hang- ing out with my friends all night," said Meaghan Neary as she ate chili, her first food in 30 hours. Chris Nicholson added that getting "together on Thursday night fostered solidarity among the participants: "Sleeping in the gym together made it easier - no temptations to eat food." The committee members organized games and activities in the gym, such as basketball and soccer. They also watched movies including Wayne's World, Star Wars, and Braveheart. But the students didn't forget what brought them together. "It 1s encouraging to see how many people are willing to give up food," said Basja Demmers. "The image that teenagers are uncaring and selfish is really challenged when you see so many teenagers working together toward such a positive goal." Many local businesses donated food and other support for the event. IGA, Food Basics, Reids Independent, 2 4 1 Pizza Square Boy, Wendy's, Trader Sam's, "Tim Hortons, National Sports, M and M Meats, 'Kentucky Fried Chicken, Country Style, and the high school contributed food or participated in other ways.
