"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" Glee PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 27, 1999 - 13 Volunteer honoured Port Perry's Gwenyth Thompson has been named recipient of a provincial award for seniors By Sally Cooke ort Perry Star Some people relax when they retire. Then there is Gwenyth Thompson, recently honoured for her outstanding community work with an International Year of Older Persons Award. Mrs. Thompson was among 48 recipi- ents of the special award at a ceremony in Toronto April 14. Usually there are 20 award winners every year, but the number was increased this year to celebrate the International Year of Older Persons. Mrs. Thompson was caught unaware when the provincial government phoned her with the news. "I was very surprised," Mrs. Thompson said. "They said I would be getting more information in the mail but it didn't come until the Thursday before Easter." Because of the delay and limited pub- licity, Mrs. Thompson didn't tell anyone. She still doesn't know who nominated her for the award. : "John O'Toole, our MPP, put forward my name after I was nominated by some- one," she said. Mrs. Thompson attended the ceremony with her family -- Leslie Dowson, Susan and Larry Latta, and Bill and Liz Thompson. Cam Jackson, Minister of Long-term Care with responsibility for seniors, made the presentations with Lieutenant Governor Hilary Weston. Mr. Jackson spoke for a minute about each winner during the two-hour award ceremony. Mrs. Thompson's award was based on her extensive work with the Lakeridge Health Corporation Port Perry, formerly Community Memorial Hospital. A member of the board of directors and executive of the hospital auxiliary, Mrs. Thompson also writes their newslet- ter. And with Kent Farndale, she wrote a history of the hospitals in Scugog called A Stitch In Time. The hard-cover book, filled with rare photos, includes several memoirs by long-time residents involved with the Port Perry health community. Never quick to take the credit herself, Mrs. Thompson mentioned how she appreciated all their help. Among Mrs. Thompson's most memo- rable contributions to Port Perry may be fr 5 Gwenyth Thompson has been hon- oured by the province for her years of community work. her unique hand-knitted designs deco- rating woolen hats for newborns. When holiday babies are born at the hospital, their hats display the special occasion. St. Patrick's Day caps have little green shamrocks while Canada Day babies wear red maple leaves. The ever- popular Halloween hat has smiling pumpkins, and Valentine's Day has red hearts. But the most difficult holiday to decorate is Thanksgiving, according to Mrs. Thompson. Knitting turkeys can - take a lot of time. She also introduced Christmas stockings for babies born the week prior to Christmas. "I thought it would be fun to send babies home in a stocking," said Mrs. Thompson. "I worked out the designs on a graph," she said. "My daughter-in-law, who's kind of an artist, helped me work it out." Future plans for Gwenyth Thompson may include surrendering the newsletter to a new writer, but Port Perry's out- standing volunteer will likely be moving on to new challenges to help her commu- nity. "I believe in keeping busy," she said. "My philosophy is, don't feel sorry for yourself." The Choral Society proposed to hold an extra show on May 12, during the second week of their 17-day run, and offered all the proceeds to Community Memorial Hospital Foundation. Proceeds will go to the Hospital Auxiliary. With a sold out show of 186 patrons, the auxiliary can expect to clear approx- imately $2,000 after the expense of paying royalties, advertising, and hall rental, says auxiliary member Jeannie Muir. : : "There is always a need for some- thing at the hospital; we have a list of what we need and would like to get, so this extra money will come in really handy for us," said Ms Muir. Putting on an extra show to help the hospital is just one of the many things the Choral Society has done to lend a hand in the community, says show producer Alice Lee. "We're a community-based group and we would like what we do to benefit the community," she said Tuesday after- noon. "Everyone in the community utilizes the hospital at sometime, and we felt this was a good way to pay back the community. The show is already up and running... the whole cast is avail- able and everything is ready so we thought we could put on a benefit per- formance for the hospital." Tickets can be purchased at Henshall's Clothing for $15.
