PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 27, 1999-5 ee Storage unit proposal in doubt 'Straw poll' shows councillors are against plan for H By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star It appears as if a pro- posal for a large storage facility on Hwy. 12 will not get enough support from councillors to become a reality. In a straw vote taken last Monday, a majority of Scugog councillors indi- cated they would not be supporting a zoning amendment when it comes to a formal vote in the future. The facility is proposed in Ward 1 for the east side of Hwy. 12, just south of the intersection of the highway and Line 6. Plans call for several indoor stor- age buildings of nearly 120,000 square feet in storage areas for boats, trailers and campers. At a public meeting three weeks ago two resi- dents who live near the proposed facility raised strong objections, stating it is the wrong kind of use for rural land, and that it should be situated on land already zoned for indus- trial uses. : The parcel of land in question is presently zoned for a mini-putt and driving range. One of the objectors said he would prefer to see that use rather than a storage facil- ity. In the straw vote taken Monday, councillors Jim McMillen, Keith Bacon and Ken Carruthers were Gadsden and David Dietlein indicated their support. Councillor Gary Mahony (Ward 5) did not vote, as he is in conflict as the owner of a similar facil- ity already located in the township. Councillors McMillen and Carruthers both said there is ample land in Scugog already zoned for this kind of use, and that is where it should be locat- wy. 12 property ed Referring to one of the objectors' statement at the public meeting that he would have to look out his front window and see a concrete storage building rather than a pastoral farm field, Councillor Gadsden said, "I can sym- pathize. "But in Ontario, the only way you can totally protect your view is to buy the land." NUTRITION PROS, What We Eat Can J.
