"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Thursday, May 4, 1999 - 9 Six local high school students win Remembrance Day writing awards BY Sally Cooke ort Perry Star Six students from Port Perry High School have won awards for their entries in the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day writ- Ing contest. Senior poetry winners were Mike Thorne, Wyatt Park and Cathy Mitchell. Senior prose winners were Ann McClelland, Amanda Lepp and Brooke Holtby. All of the students are studying writing in the English Writer's Craft class, taught by Susan Ellis. Cathy Mitchell was pleased with her third- place poetry win, while Wyatt Parks enjoyed the novelty of his second place poetry win. "It's nice, very nice," he said. "I've been writing poetry since I was five, and this is the first piece of money I've made from it." Wyatt's creativity is not restricted to poetry; he's interested in film and the visual arts. The poet is also a songwriter and per- forms in a local band. Mike Thorne captured second place in this zone "after placing first at the branch level. "It gives you confidence when somebody thinks you have talent," he said. Ann McLelland won first place at the Legion branch level for her prose, then took first in her aone. "I'd like to thank the Legion very much for pro- viding this opportunity," LCBO needs facelift From page 6 a sense of esthetics. What would a Port Perry person suggest as an LCBO building facelift theme, to fit the town's ambitions for 20007? Millennium Madness seems to be an excuse for money in the hands of government to be splashed about. But of course it isn't our money yet ... it is still deficit financing for the celebra- tion of three zeros in a date on the letters the minister hasn't yet replied to. Three zeros are a lot prettier than the LCBO building's facade, aren't they? David Foster, Port Perry said Ann. Her entry will now be competing at the district level. "I've always loved to write," said Ann, daughter of Port Perry Star writer John B. McClelland. "My aim is to get published.". Ann's favorite writer is Margaret Atwood, while Mike likes Jack Kerouac. Mike has decided to be a novelist some day, although abstract poetry is his current specialty. "I've got lots of poems; I'm working on an anthol- ogy of them," he said. Several of his poems have already been pub- lished in the school year- book. Ann enjoys fiction and non-fiction, and wrote her first screenplay in Mrs. Ellis' class. The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 419, awarded six certificates to Port Perry High School students for excellence in the Legion's Remembrance Day writing competition. The accused, including seven Scugog Township men, appeared in front of a provincial court judge on April 19 and were remanded until May 25. The men face charges in connection with a con- struction equipment theft ring that police estimate involved property worth more than $3 million. A joint investigation between Durham Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), dubbed "Project Digger", began in Scugog and spread to other parts of the province. Officers from the OPP's Provincial Auto Theft Team (PATT) executed 24 search warrants and recovered more than 40 pieces of machinery. Also seized were three restricted guns, including a fully automatic AK- 47 assault rifle and two SKS military assault rifles, in possession of a Scugog man.
