Last week the Scugog Choral 'Society presented its new spring musical production, Guys and Dolls. Based on the book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, the setting takes place in New York with the story evolving around con men, cops and ladies of dubious and saintly character. Guys and Dolls has two stories. One, which describes the unlikely romance between a pure-at-heart missionary, Sergeant Sarah Brown, and a slick Broadway gambler, Sky Masterson. The show's second romantic storyline involves gamester Nathan Detroit and his fiancee of 14 years, Miss Adelaide. The story begins when Nathan Detroit bets dashing Sky Masterson $1,000 he The musical comedy Guys and Dolls is currently running at Town Hall 1873. Another fine production by the Scugog Choral Society. Only you will find out when you attend one of these splendid performances. For Michelle Jones, who has been with the Scugog Choral Society for 13 years, this is the third production she has directed. Nunsense, the first musi- cal she directed, won a Thea award. "Half of our cast was new for this pro- duction and, for many, it was their first time on stage," Ms Jones said. "They all did very well and I can't say enough about the amazing leads." This is the third time Dave Cardinal has joined the Scugog Choral Society. Portraying gambler Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls, Mr. Cardinal starred in Anne Bonney in 1989 and a year later in Jesus Christ Superstar. A teacher at an Oshawa school, Mr. Cardinal plays a superb role as the big time trickster who intends to run the biggest crap game in all of New York. Many will recognize Kyffen Gaudet who has been with the Scugog Choral Society since 1994. By day she teaches the Grades 7 and 8 French Immersion classes at R. H. Cornish Public School but in Guys and Dolls she portrays the sexy Miss Adelaide. While many may recall her role in Music Man you will never forget the sensuous nightclub entertainer in this production. "In this musical I had much more fun as sexy Miss Adelaide", she says. For Dave Silvestri, who plays the slick Broadway gambler, Sky Masterson, this was his initial performance with the Scugog Choral Society, but not his first time on stage. A recent graduate of Durham College, Mr. Silvestri has charmed audiences before at The Oshawa Little Theatre, the Lindsay Academy and The Durham Shoestrings. "I loved playing the part of suave and sexy Sky Masterson", he said. Another newcomer to the Scugog Choral Society is Andrea Jackson who plays Sarah Brown, a sergeant who runs the Save-A-Soul Mission. Having grown up in Western Canada, Ms Jackson later graduated from theatre studies in the U.S. By day she's a flight attendant with a major Canadian airline, but by night tries to convert Sky Masterson from the slick gambler he is to a more saintly role in the missions. "When I heard the part of Sarah Brown was open I immediately applied for it," Ms Jackson says. "I've always wanted to play this role." With the music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, Guys and Dolls is bound to keep you entertained with tunes such as Luck Be A Lady, Take Back Your Mink and Sit Down, You're Rocking The Boat. The production obened April 29 and continues May 6, 7, 8, 9 (Matinee only), 12, 13, 14 and 15. Proceeds from the May 12 performance only will go to the Hospital Auxiliary of the Community Memorial Hospital Foundation. All shows begin at 8 p.m. with the exception of the May 9, 2 p.m. matinee. Cawker Public School were given an opportunity to check out a number of jobs during the school's recent Career Days fair. Checking out scuba diving with local business man Larry Emmerson was Ryan Mills (left) and Mark Schinkel, both 14-year-old Grade 8 students. Dozens of area business people took part in two days of presentations to the students.
