Hundreds of thousands of volunteers are taking action to clean up the environment, cleaning up streams and river-beds, ravines and ditches, hiking trails and parks to mark 1999 PITCH-IN CANADA Week. "What makes PITCH-IN CANADA Week special is that Canadians who participate in the campaign don't just talk about the need to keep our environment clean, they're also quite prepared to get 'hands on' and do something about pollution problems," says Alice Johnson, Volunteer Chair of PITCH-IN CANADA. "By taking action, PITCH-IN CANADA volunteers demonstrate that people can make a difference when it comes to cleaning up the trash that chokes rivers and streams, litters urban streets and wilderness trails and kills wildlife which ingests or gets trapped in garbage," adds Johnson.
