According to Neil Moore, a crops specialist with Port Perry's OMAFRA office, warm weather over the past month and a half has allowed area farmers to start their crops. "They're definitely well ahead of schedule," Mr. Moore said in mid-May. "There's only a few guys left who have to finish planting corn; most of it's already in the ground, and usually they only have half of it in by mid-May. We're at least a week ahead of a normal season." The planting of bean crops is also well under way, adds Mr. Moore. "They're really taking advantage of the dry weather, which has allowed them to get into their fields early this year ast year. and start planting," he "Prices are still on their said. way down from last year's "The important thing crop," said Mr. Moore. for them 1s to plant them "Unfortunately we need a deep enough so that the crop disaster somewhere plant can get to the mois- to bring the demand back, ture." but we all hope it's in 'With that said, the only another country and not thing lacking is some rain- ours." More fell on Monday. "Right now we desper- ately need more rain; ide- ally we'd like to see about three-quarters of an inch fall each week but we're a bit short on that with only about an inch-and-a-half in April and only an inch in May." If and when more show- ers arrive, the 1999 grow- ing season could be anoth- er successful one for local farmers, says Mr. Moore. "This could be an excel- lent year if we get enough moisture to keep up with the heat," he said. "This year is not quite as hot as 1998, but it's still going to be a warm one."
