"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 1, 1999 - 21 Still sailin' along Scugog Challenge boat race raises funds for the local public library By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star This is getting to be a habit for 24-year old sailing whiz Andrew McMillan of Port Perry. Andrew skippered his 14 foot Laser to vic- tory Sunday afternoon in the Third Annual Scugog Challenge Cup sailing competition--the second year in a row he has captured the trophy and the bright yellow cap that goes with it. Held on the very placid waters of Lake Scugog, the Challenge Cup this year attracted six intrepid sailors who had to contend with a host of problems--not the least of which was a marked lack of wind for the two legs of the course just off Port Perry's Palmer Park. Other obstacles included the usual power boats and see- do's zipping around, and, for the first time since the Challenge was started three years ago- - those infamous Lake Scugog weeds which are poking through the sur- face of the water even before the month of May has expired. The six boat race really came down to a competition among three sailors--all in Lasers, by the way-- Andrew, Mike Honey and Doug Gibson. Mike and Andrew battled most of the way with ~ Mike at one time hold- 'ing a rather substantial lead. But he ran into problems making the tight turn at the next- to-final marker when his boat got caught up in the weeds. Andrew slipped by and it was clear sailing to the fin- ish line. For the record, Doug Gibson placed third, Don McKitterick fourth, Ken Lavalette (Woodwind Yacht, Nestleton) was fifth (Ken at least avoided sinking this year) while ing for that elusive puff of air to fill the canvass. Of course, it was all in good fun and the big winner is the Scugog Memorial Library which picked up about $600 from the 50-50 draw. Librarian Tom Bonanno, who conduct- ed the draw at the con- clusion of the race said the money will be used to buy books. Winners of the draw were Catherine Hall ($209), Joanne Kuiper ($125) and Howard Hall ($83)--who served as MC for the race and kept the spectators well informed and enter- tained as he recalled the glory days of sailing on Lake Scugog when he was a youngster. (before the advent of those V6 power boats) Howard of course is the former Mayor of this fine Township. And maybe he tipped his hat that a political come- back is in the air as he magnanimously turned his 50-50 winnings back to the Library. Competitive sailing is nothing new for two- time winner Andrew. He's been at for a dozen years, was an instructor at the Whitby Yacht Club, and last fall 'placed second in the University competitions held on Lake Ontario at Queens University in Kingston. Andrew now races the larger J27 boats. He's a recent grad from Nipissing University in North Bay where he majored in environmental sciences. Mike Honey and Doug Gibson are also veteran sailors (despite their relative youth) at Frenchman's Bay Yacht Club in Pickering. Scugog Memorial Libraiy Patrick Melligan presents |{ coveted yellow cap to A who won the Scugog Chall Lake Scugog. It was the B win for Andrew who is a 24.
