Paul is my father, and I had the honour of introducing him and the guest speakers that night. During the cere- mony, I joked that everyone should buy Dad's book "The Merchants Of Old Port Perry" because it is, after all, my inheritance we're talking about. Why, I even dragged CTV's Mike Duffy along that night, in hopes of flogging a few more copies. ('Course, I later had to buy dinner and drinks for Duffy. He sure can put it back. Sadly, the inheritance is now pre-spent.) Here are some words that will come as a great relief to my Dad, who to this day, remains stubbornly un-rich: Thanks for the inheritance; and it's nothing to do 'Dad handed down a priceless inheritance with money. The inheritance is the sense of responsibility, respect, and obligation, to try and be a good neighbour. The sense of commitment to building and bettering a community. Wherever it is. Port Perry -- like all towns -- has its share of riff-raff, reprobates, ne'er-do-wells, and Tories. But Port Perry also has something else: people like Dad. People who give of themselves to promote and encourage the common good. People of character, pride, spirit and selflessness, who volunteer, lead, and join, in a determined effort to preserve the best of the past in order to build a better future. Marilyn Holm, Senior Development Associate, Oshawa Hydro plan is ill-conceived To the Editor: Ontario residents should be aware of an ill- conceived plan by Ontario Hydro's succes- sor (Ontario Power Generation) to reduce pollution from coal plants, by attempting to fix Ontario Hydro's old nuclear plants. This strategy is doomed to fall. Like old cars, these aging reactors will only break down more and more with time. Ontario Hydro shut down eight of its 20 nuclear reactors because of breakdowns, accidents and high cost. Instead of accepting offers of replacement power from cleaner natural gas and renewable energy plants, Ontario Hydro chose to try to fix these old, dangerous reactors at a cost of over $2 bil- lion. Ironically, re-start of these reactors also means much more coal burning, causing air pol- lution that kills thou- sands of people per year in Ontario.
