"A FamHy Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 15, 1999 - 11 Port Perry blood donor clinics are to be recognized by CBS The dedication of local donors is the reason Port Perry's Masonic Lodge will be accepting a major award next month. The lodge will be pre- sented with an award in July for collecting almost 3,300 units of blood at clinics held here last year. Port Perry was ranked tops in Ontario, said lodge member Bill Henshall. Approximately 16,500 units in total were collect- ed throughout the province last year, said Mr. Henshall, district chair for Ontario District, which includes Port Perry, Whitby, Oshawa, Brooklin, Orono, Port Hope and Colborne. And just last week, another 165 units were collected during a donor clinic, at the lodge. Blood donor clinics are consistently well support- ed in Port Perry, said Mr. 'Henshall. "We have always had a really good response at these clinics. Port Perry and the Ontario District have been fantastic," he said. "Port Perry has already been recognized through the Canadian Blood Services -- who col- lect the blood -- as one of their top clinics." In fact, donations here in Ontario District almost doubled last year. "We had an increase of 81.9 per cent in the dis- trict, and there was an increase of about 35 per cent across the province as well," said Mr. Henshall. "I think we can attribute that to adver- tisements, and Lodge members and their fami- lies and friends who make other people aware of what is happening. A lot of the people here who donate are not (lodge) members, but people out in the public in general." THERAPY & COUNSELLING Dr. Bill Eull, Ph.D. C Psych Psychologist Joyce Eull, RN. "At one point I used to donate blood all the time.... at least three times a year, but then I had a heart attack," he said. That was 12 years ago. "From then on I could- n't give blood anymore, but I thought I could still help out by volunteering my time and letting people know what is going on." Mr. Henshall has helped out with donor clin- ics for nine years now, and has held the district chair's role for the last four years. Port Perry's Paula Donnelly was one of many area residents who gave blood during a blood donor clinic at the Masonic Lodge last Wednesday. More than 160 units were collected.
