"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" » PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 6, 1999 - 23 Racing season reaches mid-point at Mosport Speedway By John "Wally" Nesbitt] From Corner Five The racing season at Mosport Speedway is at the halfway point and the track marked the occasion on July 3 with their first 'Fan Appreciation Night' of the year. Unfortunately for the fans and their host, Richard Price of Fortune Investments, the evening's activities were cut short by Saturday's spectacu- lar thunder storm and accom- panying rainfall. : The Bob's Towing ThunderCars were the opening act and the preliminary heat race victories were claimed by Mosport rookie Kyle Donaldson (#53 Custom Steering Gear Camaro) and Shawn Knapp (#78 CNC Custom Machining Camaro). The 20 lap feature saw plen- ty of action as five different drivers took turns leading the 22 car field. Jeff Boutin in the #16 Lakefront Tire and Auto Chevrolet was the early race leader but succumbed to the challenges of Brian Starwin (#35) on the third circuit. Points leader Kyle Donaldson (#53) managed to squirt into top spot for a solitary lap before handing the lead over to the 16-year-old Darren Kearnen (#46 TTR Transport). Finally, on lap 15, 'Smokin' Joe Anderson powered his #6 CDS Technologies Chevy into the lead and held on for a five car length victory over Jimmy Blundell's #17 Blundell Haulage Camaro and the City Buick car of Doug Lamb. Oshawa's Gabe Scimone (#4) and track newcomer Dave Russell (#24) rounded out the top five. Next up on the schedule were the Terry Cullwick Auto/Fortune Investments Challenger class. It was not the 'Welcome Back' weekend that Bruce Knapp might have hoped for. Knapp's #77 KCK Colour Printing Solutions racing truck arrived at the track fresh from the frame shop but during the lone Challenger heat race, the Oshawa resident was involved in another incident, this time with Dan Price's KX98 Lumina. With these two drivers relegated to the pits, the remainder of the field ran on to the checkers with Steve Knab in the #90 Downtown Rug Monte Carlo taking the eight lap dash. Knab was once again front and centre as the 15 lap feature was flagged away. Winning the drag race into the first turn, Knab cruised to an easy straightaway length victory. Nestleton's Dave Lee in his #09 Camaro tried to stay close but finally resigned him- self to the runner-up position with Craig Chen (#29) and Jim Horner (#59) running bumper to bumper for the final podium position. Bruce Knapp in his somewhat cosmetically altered pickup - finished in respectable fifth place. The Horner Automotive Modified cars were the next to see action with heat wins being claimed by Dwight Brown (#2 Automatics Plus) and Darrin Wrigglesworth (#36 Fastenal Chevy). Eighteen cars took the green flag for the feature race with Mike Frederick (#22) taking the early lead. On the fourth lap, a major four-car incident in turn three brought the event to a premature halt. Dwight Brown, Adrian Foster (#27), John Teune (#43) and Trevor Veitch (#75) were involved in the melee, with Veitch requir- ing medical attention for some undisclosed leg injuries. With the third turn clean up continuing ynder lightning- filled skies, Mother Nature finally completed the scenario and her resulting downpour ended the night's racing. Track officials will resched- ule the Modified feature for a 4 date to be announced later. Unfortunately, the same fate was shared by the Advantage Personnel Late Model class. Heat races were run with wins going to West Lee Talons (#21) and points leader Brad Corcoran (#50). The feature event is also to be rescheduled for a later date. CASCAR Stock Car fans are reminded that this weekend (July 10 and 11) marks the return of the popular series to Mosport Speedway. The track will open at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon for CASCAR practice and qualifying, regular racing for Mosport's ThunderCars, Challengers and Late Models will be run at the usual time on Saturday and the gates will | swing open at 11 a.m. Sunday, for the Modified Invitational | and Canadian Champ Car races. The CDS Technologies 200 for the CASCAR Eastern Championship will be flagged away at 2 p.m. Sunday.
