"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 6, 1999 - 3 Kids the main focus of this After months of plan- ning for Port Perry's mid- summer exhibition of fun and ganres, Festival Days will finally kick off later this week. The 27th annual event, dubbed "Waterfest" for 1999, will officially get underway Thursday (J uly 8) evening when the swing- ing sounds of the 50s and 60s will be heard at the Legends Tent, located across from the Latcham Centre in Palmer Park. Also that night, The Great Blue Heron Tent -- found on the other side of Palmer Park, located at the foot of Mary St. near the north Water St. ball diamond -- will feature the sounds of Mid-Life Crisis. Alcohol will be served in the tents; those entering must be at least 19 years of age. The tents will be open until 1 a.m. The second day of fun, Friday, will be geared more toward the children, with plenty of activities offered for kids of all ages. Games and rides will begin at 10 a.m. when both the kids' midway and the regular mid-way open up at the Mary St. parking lot, behind the post office. A kids' "Back To The Beach" parade will start at 11 a.m. and run from the Royal Bank down Queen St. to Palmer Park, just in time for the Teddy Bear Picnic at 11:30 a.m. for a free hot dog, drink and treat. All children aged 18 months and up are invited. Prizes will be awarded at the park for beach wear and a clown, petting zoo, pony rides, kids' games, face painting and much more will be available at the park. From 1 p.m. to4 p.m. a kids' challenge will also be held at the park, which will include a hula-hoop contest, three-legged races, limbo contest, tug-o-war and more. For the older crowd, old fashion tea, scones, and entertainment will be held at the Latcham Centre. That evening, from 8:30 p.m until 11 p.m., The Stringtime Trio and The Pigeon Creek Trio will per- form. Admission is $3. During the early evening hours on Friday a yo-yo, hula-hoop, and limbo contest will be held at the Legends Tent, which will be the venue for Pink Cadillac later. At the Great Blue Heron tent, Trooper will be in th spotlight as they kick things off shortly after 8 p.m. Tickets can be pur- chased at the door, or in advance at The Port Perry Star, the Scugog Chamber, of Commerce or Jayson Callan Music for $10. Once again the midways will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday and a mutt show will be held on the Queen St. stage, beginning at 9 a.m. Dog owners must be 14 or under. Prizes will be awarded. A Watermelon-seed spit- ting contest, open to those under 14, will be held in Palmer Park at noon and the baby derby will begin their crawl in the park at 12:30 p.m. More than 50 classic and modern Corvettes will be parked on Queen St. from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. as well that day and visitors to Festival Days will notice Elvis strolling around the downtown core. A kareoke contest will run from 4 p.m to 7 p.m at the Legends Tent and later, around 7:30 p.m., a bikini/boxer contest will be held at the Great Blue Heron Tent. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. An auction will also be held at the Queen St. stage at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
