"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 27, 1999 - 9 Oshawa man arrested after brutal assault on woman An Oshawa man who twrned himself into urham Police last Friday evening was charged after a woman was choked, assaulted and threatened. Durham Police report that a 46-year-old Oshawa man was placed under arrest around 11:30 p.m. on July 23 after he attended Oshawa's 17 Division station, a few hours after a 40-year-old Oshawa woman was assaulted in Port Perry. Police report that the man, the woman and her friend launched a boat from the public boat launch in Port Perry on North St. around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Shortly after the boat was launched, the trio encountered problems with the outboard motor and the victim attempted to fix the problem by jumping-into the water to check for weeds. Unable to find the problem, the woman was helped back into the boat by the suspect and her friend. Police say the man became very angry and began to physically con- front the victim before grabbing her neck and choking her, say police. The suspect then struck the victim repeat- edly in the face and threw her about the boat, police say. Once back on shore the brutal assault continued, say police. The suspect then got into a truck and drove away. The victim went to a nearby house and asked the residents to call police, who arrived,short- ly after and took her to a Port Perry hospital where she was treated and released. At approximately 11:30 p.m. that night, a 46-year- old Oshawa man turned himself over to Durham Police at Oshawa's 17 Division. He was placed under arrest and charged with one count of assault, one count of threatening, and one count of choking. It's the vegetable season where we look forward to the availability of fresh vegetables from our local producers. Corn, nutritious as well as fun to eat, is a good source of fibre, folate, and vitamin C. Corn can be eaten fresh or is also excellent frozen for later use in chowders, chilis, stews or soups. For fresh corn, it is best to eat it as soon as possible after picking to enjoy maximum sweetness. When buying corn always buy with the green husk attached and the silks of the corn feeling damp. Kernels when burst should be liquidy, not dry. To store corn keep the husk on, and preferably wrap it in a damp towel in the It refrigerator. When its time for cooking, for best results, soak in cold water for approximately one house, then boil briefly, barbecue or microwave. . For a variation of barbecued corn try loosening the husk of the corn, and placing a sprig or two of fresh herbs such as tarragon or chives. Reshape the husk and place the corn directly on the grill, barbecue covered for 3-5 minutes.
