PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 27, 1999 - 23 JOHN B. McCLELLAND / PORT PERRY STAR MVP: Scarborough Blues pitcher Rick Miaskowski was presented with the tournament Most Valuable Player award for his outstanding contributions to his team's success. It took a few extra innings, but Scarborough beat the Northern Ontario Relics to claim the 1999 Master's Elimination Tournament. Here, PPDMSA representative Dave Kay presents the award. Former Port Eagles both saw action From Page 22 batter was called safe on an infield hit that scored what proved to be the tying run. The Relics argued the call, to no avail, of course. After two scoreless overtime innings, the Blues Bill McTavish stretched a none- out single into a double and then was driven home with the winning run on a sharp line drive to right field by second- sacker Pat Acton. OASA executive member Bill Danford of Oshawa presented the shield to the winning team. Past president Len Henderson of Thornhill said this is the fourth season for a Masters Division playdown. To qual- ify, the pitchers must be over 40 and posi- tion players at least 37 years of age. This tournament brought together players who have been competing against each other in fastball tournaments since they were teenagers. Two former Port Perry Eagles -- pitchers John Annis and Lawrie Williams -- suited up for the Oshawa entry and both saw action in this affair. Tournament MVP was pitcher Rick Miaskowski from the Blues who won a pair of games as the Blues went through the tournament without a loss. Prior to the final, the Relics only loss had been 4-1 at the hands of the Blues. Reps from both teams said a decison on whether to make the trip east for the Canadian finals would be made by the players at a later date. Last year, the Blues competed in Eastern Canada and placed fifth after losing a couple of close games. Henderson said the idea for a Masters Division in fastball is to give players over 40 a chance to continue to play at a high level of competition. "And they want to have some fun, too," said Henderson. "Some of these guys have been competing against each other for 20 or more years. Now they are friends who enjoy the game." Many of those on the diamonds this weekend played at the national level and some at the international level. The OASA past president had words of praise for the work by the host committee from Port Perry Minor Softball headed by Dave Kay and Dave McTaggart, and sev- eral volunteers that included Wayne Venning, his son Chad, and John Bricknell. However, there were expressions of disappointment that the tournament was not better attended by fans and spectators, given Port Perry and area's recent history as a hot-bed for mens' fastball. This year, the community has no mens' fastball, and Henderson said this is hap- pening in a few areas of the province. However, he added the sport continues to enjoy popularity in most parts of Ontario. He explained that in forming the Masters Division, the OASA is striving to keep the sport "competitive, affordable and fun" for guys who reach the "big 4-0".
