"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 27, 1999 - 3 Fun forecast when 71st regatta is held in Caesarea By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Plenty of tradition and a few new touches will be featured this coming holi- day weekend, when the annual Lake Scugog Regatta is held in Caesarea. The regatta and field day take place Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, Aug. 1 in the hamlet. Activities are planned primarily for Putsey Park and the lake front at the government dock. Things are shaping up nicely for the event, which has been held each summer since 1928, said organizer Len Prout. He said committee members work hard each year to present a program that reflects that long tradi- tion, and also offers new elements to keep folks interested. "The thing is that 71 years is a hell of a long Alarm raised as boaters dial up 911 Local firefighters were called into 'action last Thursday evening after a boat on Lake Scugog encountered motor problems and began to drift. "There was a report called in from the people on the boat; they called 911 because they were having problems with their boat and they did- n't know where they were," District Chief Dave Ballingall said Friday morning. The boaters used the municipal boat launch and headed north around Scugog Island, where they experienced motor problems and made the emergency call. Scugog firefighters were dispatched at around 6:45 p.m., and the local fire boat was launched from a Scugog Island marina a short while later. "Once we got onto the lake we were in contact with them from time to time on their cell phone, but they kept giving us different directions... they really had no clue where they were," said D.C. Ballingall. Durham Regional Police were called and plans were made to dis- patch a police boat and helicopter to assist in the search. But that was called off when the boaters made it to land. "It was sort of a sur- prise call for us... Usually we get called on a missing person or res- cue, but this time we had to conduct a search before we could rescue anybody," said D.C. Ballingall. time to keep a thing going," said Mr. Prout. "We go one year at a time." The fun starts Friday night, July 30, with base- ball and volleyball.
