PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 27, 1999 - 5 "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" Making waves Rotary's annual Aquarama fundraiser for Easter Seals hits the water here Aug. 15 By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Organizers are hoping for another big splash next month, when the Port Perry Rotary Club stages its seventh annual Aquarama fundraiser for Easter Seals. The Aug. 15 competition at Palmer Park will continue a tradition of success established over the past six years here in Scugog, says event chair Heather Haliburton-Smith. , "This is one of the most popular fundraisers in Scugog, and we're proud to be able to continue it again this year. Everyone always has a lot of fun partici- pating in this, but it is the kids who this is all for," said Mrs. Haliburton-Smith. With 11 teams already confirmed and more than two weeks left to go before the event, this year could see some record numbers for competitors, she said. "Last year we had 15 teams and raised more than $13,000 and I'm hoping, really hoping, that this year maybe we could get 20 teams and even more money." / Over the past six years more than $37,000 has been raised for Easter Seals and local childrens' charities, and another successful event in 1999 could see the fundraiser total hit the $50,000 mark. The event sees riders board a personal water craft and make their way round a triangular course just off the gdhores of Kinsmen Beach while being timed. Each team consists of five riders: The Sea Doos, gas, life jackets and per- sonnel will once again be graciously donated by Port Perry Marina owner John Mackey. As always, prizes, trophies, and medals were donated by local businesses and will be awarded at the end of the day for the fastest team time, fastest individ- ual time, highest individual pledges, highest team pledges, slowest ride, and the most vnusual ride. Riders are required to turn in their pledges prior to the race during registra- tion times, which will be held between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. the day of the event. The races begin at 11 a.m. and are expected to last for more than three hours. Already preparing for the Aug. 15 event are the Rotary River Rats, The Port Perry Starwarriors, Moon Cricket Racing, Devon's Dare Devils, This Week's Wet 'N Wild, Sherry's Survivors, Min-Com Realty, Hawaii 5-0, Devon's Dolphins, Wanna Partee Inn, and The Investors' Group. Anyone interested in participating in Aquarama '99 can contact Heather Haliburton-Smith during the day at Everlasting Memories Floral and Bridal Shoppe, 985-8208, or during the evenings at 985-7870. ' Organizers hope to hit the $50,000 mark this year when Aquarama '99 is held on Aug. 15. Joining in the fun this year will be, from left, 1998's fastest racer Grant Hooker, Port Perry Marina owner John Mackey, Port Perry Rotary Club's Easter Seals' chair Jerry Hopkins and Tammy Holtrust.
