Who was the dignitary that officially opened POWER WASH SATURDAY Firefighters hot at extrication competition By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog firefighters brought home the only thing that really mattered from the recent Central Ontario Regional Extrication Competition, says District Chief Dave Ballingall: experience. "It was a great learning experience, for the boys and for myself. When you go to these things you always pick up a few things; you always learn a few things, and the important thing is what you ##rn and what you bring back." While no standings were released after the competition wrapped up, DC Ballingall says that his team finished somewhere among the top entrants during the July 9-10 event, host- ed by the Toronto Fire Department. "We were quite satisfied with the competi- tion. It was well run. The results we got were not as good as the ones we got at the Eastern Ontario event, but we're still satisfied," he said. In the 20-minute unlimited competition, which sees firefighters use any tools necessary, the Scugog team finished third out of 19 teams. During the unlimited event -- no power tools allowed -- standings were not made avail- able, but the District Chief feels his team ended up among the top three. "There was some real tough competition at the Central Region; there were a large number of good quality teams competing there," he said, noting that competitors came from any- where between Mississauga and Durham Region. The good showing at the recent event con- tinues a tradition of respectability for the Scugog Fire Department, he added. "We always do well at these sort of competi- tions. The Scugog team is recognized as a very competitive and well-drilled team; others watch us when we compete and that's nice to know," said D.C. Ballingall. "A lot of the teams there are well-respected and they all do well... they all get to show off their good skills." While a team from upper New York State won the over all event, the Ajax Department will advance to the international competition in Florida in September because the Brighton team 1s not considered part of the Central Ontario Region. "It's disappointing for us not to go, but we offer our congratulations and good luck to Ajax," said D.C. Ballingall. The extra training the Scugog firefighters put 111 for events such as this is a benefit to the community, he said. They began training in April, two hours twice a week. That's practice that helps not only at com- petitions, but in real-life emergency scenarios, said D.C. Ballingall. "There is a lot of dedication here from our manpower; this is a real committed team," he said.
