"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 4, 1999 - 9 Police divers called as capsized boat found It's one of several marine thefts probed by police in the Scugog area recently By Rik Davie Special to the Star Police divers were called to the area when an overturned boat was found floating in Lake Scugog Friday. The call for divers was placed around 8 a.m. July 30 after the 17-foot day cruiser was found in the channel off West Shore Marine with no signs of it's occupants. Durham Regional Police dive teams searched the boat and the immediate area for signs of life, and discovered that the hull of the boat had been smashed in several places. Police divers and forensic officers combed the area for fear that the occu- pants of the boat had met with a boat- ing mishap. The dangerous and expen- sive search went on until divers were satisfied that no one had gone down with the smashed boat. It was determined later that the boat had been stolen from the area of Port Perry Marina sometime between July 29 and 30. Salvage crews from West Shore Marine discovered that the drain plug had been removed and the ignition showed signs of having been tampered with. Salvagers speculated that the Police divers and officers from 26 Division board boat capsized. They had to ensure no one was trapped inside to take to the waters of Lake Scugog Friday morning. The the boat before it could be towed to shore by salvage divers were called out when a 17-foot boat was found crews. drain plug may have been removed and the boat set adrift with its motor run- ning. Durham Police spokesperson Al Robins said that it was one of three similar thefts over the course of the past few days. He reported details of two other boat thefts: Q On July 31, a new Smoker Craft bass type boat was taken from a dock at the end of Putsey Dr. in Caesarea. The owners reported that the black, white and gray boat with a 15 horse Yamaha motor, worth over $22 400 and almost $1,100 in fishing gear was taken. No sign of the boat could be found on the lake, despite the fact that police boat patrols responded to the call min- - utes after it was received. Q In the other water craft theft, police say that a Polaris personal watercraft worth $4,000 was taken from a home on Pleasant View Drive in Caesarea on July 31 between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. In other news, a worker for a mason- ry company currently on the restoration project at Port Perry High School returned to the job site late Tuesday, July 27 to find his tools missing. Stolen from the site were a Stihl 'Quick-Cut' saw equipped with a dia- mond cutting blade, and a gas can. The saw and blade are valued at over $900. All Weather Protection Always!
