Increasing readings of the e.coli bacteria in water at. the popular 'beach, in Palmer Park, have been monitored for several weeks, by the department. Workers test bacteria levels at public beaches throughout the region each week. : Ironically, Kinsmen Beach bucked the region-wide trend last week, as it was the only swimming area posted as unsafe. The other local public beach, Lakeside on Scugog.Island, is quite safe, with test results that are among the lowest in the region. "At Kinsmen Beach, though, signs warning swimmers went up Friday when test samples taken earlier in the week showed 116 parts of e.coli bacteria per 100 ml of water present. e.coli per 100 ml of water, This is the first time the beach has been posted this summer. High bacte- ria levels bring about closure of Kinsmen Beach at least once each season. And in years past, swimmers have seen the beach posted as unsafe for weeks on end. The warning signs did not stop a number of people, young and old, from taking to the water, however. Sunday when the sun emerged after a gloomy Saturday, youngsters and their par- ents were flocking to splash and play in the water. The regional health department osts signs warning people of high Port rie levels because of the illnesses that are associated with ingesting e.coli. They include ear and throat infections and intestinal bugs.
