"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 4, 1999 - 3 Township seeks clerk as administration duties grow By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog ownship clerk-administrator Earl Cuddie is about to have his workload cut in half. "They're splitting my job up into two separate ones," he said, referring to the township's search for a clerk. up, I can concentrate on the administration end and give someone else the opportunity to fill the clerk's position. With all the development occur- ring and the (provincial) government's review of services this will give me more time to work on the management of the municipality. Most municipalities have already split the jobs; we're just catching up." As for the new clerk, Mr. Cuddie says the township is looking for "someone with a back- ground in the municipal field who can step into my shoes... they should have experience dealing with councils, the public, boards, and commis- sions. They will play a large role in the town- ship." And, if everything runs smoothly, it could lead to Mr. Cuddie's eventual retirement. "I don't really have any formal plans, a lot hinges on if this individ- ual works out. I'd like to continue to do the actual managing, to fill a role in a leadership capacity in Scugog Township. But, if I feel like I'm not making a significant contribution to the township, then I'll retire." Resumes will be accepted by the township until Aug. 13. There's been a good response to the ads so far, said Mr. Cuddie. Mr. Cuddie said it's necessary to hire a clerk, because the dual role of clerk-administrator has become too big a job. "The workload for the clerk-administrator is becoming such a large load in these times, so it was decided it was time to have an actual clerk fill the role," he said. "It's quite a bit of work doing both jobs, and this idea had been on the burner for several years now, and it was just decided that it was time." Mr. Cuddie has filled the dual role of clerk- administrator in Scugog Township for the past 20 years now. He marked the milestone anniver- sary last Friday. As the township administrator, Mr. Cuddie oversees manage- ment of the entire munic- ipal organization. As clerk, he holds a statuto- ry legal role, making sure all the paper work that goes along with operating a municipality is in order. "At the present time I've found myself spread too thin; I feel that I need more time to actu- ally do the managing end of the job. As the clerk I'm committed to the paperwork and all the functions it requires, and it does require a lot of attention," said Mr. Cuddie.
