"This was the highest we've ever had," said organizer Heather Haliburton Smith of the $15,292.61 raised for Aquarama '99. "We went over our goal... we were aiming to hit $50,000 in seven years and we passed it by more than $2,000. The whole day was excellent; we couldn't have asked for a bet.- ter day and a better result." Aquarama is the Port Perry Rotary Club's annual fundraiser to raise funds for Easter Seals and other local childrens' chari- ties. It is held in August off the shores of Palmer Park on Lake Scugog and features riders making their way around a triangu- lar course on personal water crafts while being timed. "I want to thank all the riders who brought the sunshine to the Rotary Club and to Easter Seals and other childrens' chari- ties. "We had one less team and therefore fewer riders this year, but obviously they raised a lot more money this year. I'm astounded by the financial support they received from the com- munity this year and the support from area sponsors and busi- nesses who made this a great day," she said, adding that the fundraiser has become quite a popular summer attraction for many. "There are lots of people out there who are getting used to doing it each and every year. They get out there, get their pledges, and ride; they know what they're doing and I think they really enjoy it. "We're getting the same individuals and the same teams each year. It's really great to see the tremendous sup- port we're getting." Ray Edwards of the IGA Mooncricket Racing team grabbed the fastest individual time with a time of 63-seconds, beating out 1998 winner Grant Hooker by one second. The fastest team of the day was once again the IGA Mooncricket Racing team, who took the hon- our last year as well. . The Rotary River Rats collected the most pledges with an impressive total of $3,130.50. The top five pledge collectors, in order, were Dr. Bob Allin, $1,755.50; Yvonne Spoffard, $1,570; 1999 Easter Seals Child Tammy Holtrust, $1075; Donna Herold, $1018; and Bob Smith, $610. The most unusual ride went to Christian Leyes of the Invest-Oars Group and Bryan Pawlin picked up the best costume award with his impression of the devil. "I'm just ecstatic...
