| 10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 17, 1999 Literacy Network assists residents with basic skills Low literacy skills affect over 40 per cent of our adult population. According to Statistics Canada, millions of adult Canadians have difficulty reading, writing, and using numbers. So if you have trouble with these tasks, you are not alone. The Literacy Network of Durham Region is a non-profit organization that helps residents of Durham who have diffi- culty with the basic skills needed to succeed in today's competitive world. Here are a few facts about literacy in Canada: Q Approximately 24 to 26 per cent of Canadians can only handle simple reading tasks. Q Only 74 per cent of young Canadians who graduate from high school have strong litera- cy skills. a Forty per cent of Canadians over age 65 have not completed pri- mary school. This lack of education has left them with poor literacy skills, and therefore, may lower their quality of life and jeopardize their health and safety. 0 Most callers (88 per cent) are between the ages of 16 and 44-years- old. .
