The Great Blue Heron Charity Casino will close down its bingo operations tonight to make room for slot machines. In a brief press release, the local gambling facility announced last Wednesday (Aug. 11) afternoon that it would cease to offer bingo to its patrons after the last game is called on Aug. 17. Renovations will begin in the bingo hall shortly after, casino general manager Thomas Kellner said in the release. Perry Steiner, the marketing director for the local casino, was also as vague when reached at his World Casinos office in Toronto late last week. "We'd like to tell our bingo patrons that the bingo hall is closing, and renovations will be done to accom- modate slot machines," said Mr. Steiner. Mr. Steiner would not comment on when the machines would be operational and available to the public, nor would he say what the minimum/maximum payouts would be or if the machines would be quarter, loonie or toonie slots, and-how many terminals'there- would be. . The local casino's marketing director also would not comment on whether the proceeds from the slots would be included in donations to charity or whether the cash would go directly into the pockets of the facility's own- ers. "Slots are a popular item right now," he said when asked if the casino was concerned about angering its numerous loyal bingo patrons. Mr. Steiner also would not comment on who grant- ed the casino permission to operate slot terminals or why.
