"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 17, 1999 - 23 I'll be held at the Saddlewood Equestrian Centre The Canadian Pony Club National Rally will be held hear Bethany next week Elaine Young and Ashley Lawrence of the Durham Pony Club are among those representing the Central Ontario Region as its hosts the Canadian Pony Club National Rally at Saddlewood Equestrian Centre near Bethany, Aug. 22 to 27. They will compete against riders from the British Columbia Interior, British Columbia Islands, British Columbia Lower Mainland, Alberta, Western Ontario, New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia/Newfoundland Regions. Those from outside Ontario will be loaned experienced horses. "Rally" is the Pony Club term for Eventing, an Olympic discipline in which competitors must ride a formal Dressage test, follow with Roads and - Tracks and Cross Country endurance phases, and finish with a Stadium Jumping competition. Scoring is done on a penalty points basis, with all errors of course, refusals, rails down and falls counted as penalties. Penalties are also incurred for taking too much time or too little to finish the endurance phase. The rider/team with the fewest penalty points wins. One major difference between Pony Club rallies and other Eventing con- tests is that the teams are composed of two riders and one "Captain" (groom/helper), with no coaching or help allowed from adult supervisors, coaches or parents. From the time the rally officially starts until its conclu- sion, the young riders are on their own (adults may intervene if there is a risk of injury, but this will eliminate the competitor concerned). The other major difference is that the competitors are judged on stable management and horse care as well as the riding phases of the competition. Sunday is "check-in" day. Monday will be spent riding borrowed horses, and in a cross-country course building clinic by Hugh Morshead. Horse tryouts continue on Tuesday, along with a sta- dium course building clinic with Danny Foster and a veterinarian inspection clinic with Don Armitage. Wednesday's schedule includes both Dressage com- petition and a Dressage clinic by Dorita Kozak, along with the official course- walk for the Cross-Country phase. On Thursday, the Roads and Tracks and Cross-Country phases take place, and the contest finishes Friday with the Stadium Jumping phase. Saddlewood Equestrian Centre is five kilometres north of Bethany on County Road 38. Competition starts at 9 a.m. Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. Friday. Spectators are welcome without charge. REGINTRA o enter. 2.)
