St estes "A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 21, 1999 - 31 SPORTS Team commitment is ke From Page 30 He especially likes the atti- tude the players displayed right through training camp. "You could see the dedication and commitment in how and when the players arrived at the arena (for training camp sessions) and just how hard they worked through the entire camp. There has been a different attitude and level of intensity this year," Parliament told The Port Perry Star. . Here are the Port Perry play- ers signed to the MoJacks as of Sunday evening: goaltender Ryan Fraser; defense Jeff Clarke, Mike Heasman, Jon Froates, Jeff Ashton; forwards Shane Norton, Adam Jones, Mike Hamilton, Ryan McQuade, Nick Pelyk, and Derek Tindall. Head coach Thornbury said Ryan Fraser, who played Midget last season, had a strong training camp in grabbing the back-up spot in goal from Ben Jillard, who had the position last year. "He looked great at the start of camp and got better as it went along," Thornbury said of Fraser. Just how much action he'll get behind veteran Jeff Mackie remains to be seen, said Thornbury. But he will not hes- itate to put him into any game situation or should Mackie be forced out of the line-up with an injury or suspension. But Mackie, an Oshawa native starting his third cam- paign with the MoJacks, will get the nod this weekend when the MoJacks play Friday night in Georgina and then host the Ice Saturday night for the home opener at the Scugog Arena. Mackie missed part of train- ing camp with a leg injury, but declared himself ready to play, - (i ) Jeff Clarke Steady on defence and Thornbury said the veteran looked very sharp in practice Sunday night. The MoJacks will open the season without two veteran blue liners. Jeff Clarke is out with an injured hand and Mike Heasman is in Florida with the Scugog Fire Department Extrication team competing in the International championships. Along the line, the team will have veteran Matt Glenn from y to a successful season, says GM Whitby; Jon Froates and Jeff Ashton, both local guys, and Kevin Coates, a newcomer from the Oshawa Minor system. Two other defenseman, Andrew Boyle and Chris Lazary were out to practice Sunday night and could get into the line-up. Boyle played part of last season with the MoJacks and showed plenty of promise. Coach Thornbury described his blue line corps as "aggressive" in clearing the front of the net and with plenty of speed to move the puck up ice via the pass or the rush. The forward lines will be as follows: Bill Beaulieu at centre between Shane Norton and Dale Drummond. Beaulieu is a 20- year-old from Oshawa; Norton is a Port Perry native described as a talented complete hockey player with all kinds of Jr. B experience in Bowmanville; Drummond, in his third year with the MoJacks, is a strong offensive player who can put the puck in the net. This trio should be very exciting to watch and will provide lots of scoring punch. Adam Jones, Mike Hamilton at centre and Ryan Whitney will also start as a line. Jones is a veteran MoJack; Hamilton, from the Port Midgets, saw some Jr. C action late in the season; and Whitney comes to the team from the Oshawa AAA Midgets. Ryan McQuade, centre Nick Pelyk and Derek Tindall will make up an "all Port Perry" line as they are graduates of the local minor system. McQuade and Pelyk are off the Predators from last year, while Tindall was on the MoJack roster and displayed lots of hustle and grit in his rookie season. Mike Clark, John Werry and ZN Jeff Mackie Veteran netminder Matt Thurston all hail from Oshawa with Werry and Thurston coming from the AAA Midget squad. Clark was a reg- ular with the MoJacks for part of last season. Adam Metheral of Woodville is also signed to a card. He's coming off a fine rookie season with the MoJacks (he won top rookie award for the team) and finished in the top three in scor- ing. But he'll be out of action for about a month with a broken finger suffered in a pre-season game in Little Britain. Coach Thornbury said this year's roster is bigger, stronger and better skating than last sea- son, and he likes the determina- tion and commitment displayed through training camp. Those are very important words in his coaching vocabulary. In fact, he has made it known that players cannot miss a game or practice without a darn good reason. Thornbury said it's yital for the team to get off to a quick start this year -- at least .500 in the first ten games. Last year, the MoJacks seemed to get behind the eight-ball from the outset (five points in the first ten games) and Thornbury is determined not to let the club repeat that again this season, so he'll be pulling out all the stops to get a win or a tie in the early going. In four pre-season games, the MoJacks got two wins and a tie, with both wins over Little Britain by fairly lop-sided scores of 10-3 and 8-3. They tied the Ice and lost to them 10-7. For ModJack fans the home opener is this coming Saturday night (Sept. 25) at 7:30 p.m. A special guest will drop the cere- monial first puck, and as an extra attraction there will be lucky draws for prizes. Tuesday afternoon bowling report Turn to Page 31 The Roofers answered right back and it was Greg Warriner's second goal of the game from Paul Goreski. In the sec- ond frame two goals for John Harman, who is no stranger to the scoresheet, gave Cedar Creek a one goal lead. His first was set up by Derek Fitzgerald, while his second was from Rob Scott and Derek Fitzgerald. Late in the final period a questionable call by the officials allowed the Roofers to tie the game when Warren Geer slid a back hand past the Cedar Creek goal- tender. This was following what looked to be a slapshot off of the stick of Mark Goreski as Goreski's was able to steal a point ih this gante. K.C.I.
