That loss to the Chiefs --last year's champs in the Central Jr. C loop -- evened the ModJack record so far at two wins and two losses, and nipped a mod- est two game winning streak since their 6-0 drubbing by the Ice in the season opener. Setting sail for a successful 2000 racing season Port Perry's Michael Honey is winding down another successful sailing season. Michael, a 16-year-old Port Perry High School student, got off to a great start early in the spring when he placed second at the Ontario Sailing Association (16 and under) regatta in Hamilton, and from there his results just got better and In May, Michael was invited to attend the Canadian Yachting Association High Performance Five-Day Training Camp where the participants were coached by past and present World Sailing Later during the summer, he participated i in the . Turn to Page 27 I a us because the tracksuits were awful ugly green/yellow colour that team members were correctly identified by Russian space satellites. ~ At any rate, one day while Steve and I were working at the arena, two little boys of about seven years of age approached us cautiously and stopped directly in front of us. Looking at the ModJack sweatsuit that Steve was wearing, the one little boy asked, "do you play for the MoJacks?" Chest swelling with pride, Steve gave the kid a stick-with-me- and-you'll-go- places kind of pat on the head and said, "yes, I do." The little boy, then noting the number 19 on the track pants inched closer and asked with utter reverence, "are you Steve Connors?" Chest further pushed out, Steve answered, yes, I am." The little guy looked up at Steve and said, "you're awesome," dragging it out 80 it sounded more like awwwwwesome. But before Steve could fully enjoy the moment, the other little boy who had yet to speak quickly stepped up to the other guy and said indignantly, "no, he's not! my dad says he's a goon!" Ever seen the air come out of a balloon? I think Steve's chest even made that same sound. Funniest thing I've ever seen. I think if there is a truism in life, it is that we all tend to admire and look up to people who we wish to in some way copy, and through this process, we grow as people. For me, Steve Connors is one of those people who I admire, look up to, and in some ways, live vicariously through. He has abili- ties that I will never have, talents to do things I can't do, but.would like to do, and secondly, and more importantly, he has the stones to do things I wouldn't do, but would love to do. When I look at Steve, there has always been, and always will be, a little boy inside ¢ of me that thinks, "you're awesome!"
