Sometime during an 11-day period from Oct. 11 to 22 thieves broke into a building at the corner of Island Rd. and Stephenson Point Rd., known as the old school house, and made off with an estimated $60,000 worth of artifacts. The building is used as an off-site storage site for the museum, said Constable Al Robins, media spokesperson for 26 Division. Thieves pried off a plywood sheet covering a west- side basement window, and then removed a metal grill, said Const. Robins. Once inside, they kicked out a door on the north side of the building and stole "a rather extensive list of items" valued in excess of $60,000. A partial list of the stolen articles includes: a a seven-foot high secretary's desk valued at $2,000; a a seven-foot high sectional wardrobe worth an estimated $1,500 and two steamer trunks; Herbally Yours Health Foods er Natural Products "HERBALLY YOURS BRAND" VITAMIN C S 29 500 mg Chewable reg. $11.99 100 tabs ZINC LOZENGES $199 PRODUCTS (O10 12 |), (0) {s BI with Vitamin C reg. $8.49 "W605 Canadian Made & Quality at Competitve Prices. Also taken during the break-in were five mahogany boxes, each containing 100 glass slides of "a documen- tary nature" depicting various sites around the world. Each slide is valued at $100, for a total estimated at $50,000, said Const. Robins. Two electric lanterns, valued at $400, used to view the slides were also stolen. Other items taken were an oak barber shop wall unit worth $3,000; a $350 love seat; a sword and scab- bard; a wooden bench with a wooden back valued at $750; and various other historical artifacts. Const. Robins noted that the museum theft may be linked to other recent heists at the local Orange Club Hall and Masonic Hall, where historical items, such as ceremonial swords and other artifacts, were taken. "There is a possibility that they are related," he said. "These thefts appear to be the work of people who knew what to take and what the value of the items are." . The incident is currently being investigated by Durham Regional Police detectives. The Best is Yet To Comelll 3 NIA RE REN RVR TAN RE RE RUT IR RIN ETN 20th Century and the first in my new place. Firefighters from Station One here in Port Perry were dis- patched to a total of six fires on Sunday night, - said fire chief Richard Miller. Most involved garbage and wood set ablaze by vandals. All six calls were in the Greenbank area near the Phoenix farm on Hwy. 12, north of Port Perry, said Chief Miller. "They were definite- ly set by vandals, noth- ing but. I was sur- prised it wasn't town- ship wide," he said. "It has been pretty quiet over the past four or five years. This is probably the first time we've rolled the trucks in the past years." On occasion in the past firefighters are called out to turn off fire hydrants which were targeted by van- dals, but that's about it, he added. The only significant problem firefighters ran into over the week- end was when vandals torched a bridge near Regional Rd. 6 and Old Simcoe Rd., said the chief. While some resi- dents report hearing an explosion around 10 p.m., Chief Miller did not have any informa- tion on the occurrence. Durham Police, however, attended a Cragg Rd. address near Greenbank where a five-gallon gas tank was set ablaze in an open area, along with with a mound of garbage and old wood. e Mutual Funds e Estate Planning * RE.S.P's * RR.S.P's * GIC's Daily Interest 4.25% 1 Year GIC = 5.7% 3 Year GIC 6.3% 5 Year GIC Port Perry 985-0948 Oshawa 571 4222 6.55% rates subject lo change without notice ATRIMARK INVESTMENTS DENTAL CENTRE * Dr. J.
