Having food and shelter as well as the right to an education were second and third, respectively. The vote was part of the National Election for the Rights of Youth, a program sponsored by UNICEF and Elections Canada. The theme behind the election is to make stu- dents aware of the elec- toral process, and what things they may take for granted here in Canada, says Grade 7/8 teacher Marg Snider-McGrath. "They got to vote just as their parents do; they have rights as citizens, and for a change those under the age of 18 got a chance to vote," she said. Students from Grades 1 through 8 had the opportunity to examine about 10 different issues the day before the elec- tion.
